Chakri Day commemorations in Phuket

PHUKET: -- Saturday (April 6) is Chakri Day, commemorating the foundation of the royal Chakri Dynasty.

Because the day falls on a weekend, next Monday (April 8) will be a substitution day, with government offices and many businesses closed for the day.

There will be no requirement for restaurants and bars to stop selling alcohol.

Chakri Day commemorates the coronation of General Thong Duang as Phra Bat Somdet Phra Poramoruraja Maha Chakri Borommanat Phraphutthayotfa Chulalok, King Rama of Siam, on April 6, 1782.

King Rama I was the founder of the royal dynasty that continues to this day. A general of the Siamese army before ascending to the throne, he played a large part in reunifying the country under King Taksin after the sacking of Ayutthaya by Burmese forces in 1767.

When King Taksin was deposed in a palace coup, Gen Thong Duang defeated the rebels and then took the throne for himself.

Rama I also moved the new capital established by King Taksin from Thonburi to the opposite side of the Chaophraya River, thereby founding Bangkok.

It was he who ordered the building of the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew. He also brought order to the Buddhist monkhood, organised the legal system and reestablished some links with Europe.

He reigned for 27 years, dying in 1809 and being succeeded by his son Isarasundhorn, who became King Rama II.
