60-year-old and above to have free BTS rides during Songkran

BANGKOK, 4 April 2013 (NNT) – People who are 60 years old and above will ride BTS trains for free during April 13-15.

Surapong Laoha-unya, Chief Operating Officer of Bangkok Mass Transit System Public Company, said the BTS will provide free services to elderly who are 60 years old and above. All they need to do is showing their ID cards at the ticket booth at all stations, while children under 90 centimeters tall will also have the same privilege.

He said the scheme is to help Thais foster relationship in their families, especially for the elderly who are an integral part of them, allowing family members to spend time with one another.

Those who are 60 years old and above will get the free BTS service during April 13-15, from 6 am to 12 am.

Even though it is relatively expensive, I really do enjoy riding BTS. Just wish they would have extended it to Don Meung before the 1997 financial crash. I lived in Laski for awhile and it would have been sooooo much better than taking the 29 bus to Mo Chit.

A nice gesture. I just hope they can get escalators working. It can be quite a hike from the street to the platform and not all stations have elevators at street level.

I don't know much about this project, but I must say that whenever I've encountered a 'special offer' I think they allow the foreigner with some sort of Thai ID to partake.

They definitely do not allow foreigners to partake in the special fares for retirees and the Songkran promotion, I already checked this as I have Thai I.D.

I always remember my Thai-Chinese multi-millionaire boss treating me to a Thai Traditional massage in Pattaya. They charged him B150 and B500 for me. As he was paying, he moaned like hell.

No it's not always that way in the west, but then again I rarely see elderly people begging for money with young kids for company when i cross a footbridge in the uk. However i do see this every day on the central bang na footbridge here. So that's good isn't it, all nicely balanced out.

BTS has xenophobic policies. You may be surprised to find that this will be for Thai citizens only. Just like the senior discount BTS card they make available for Thai seniors. They will tell you to your face this is for Thais only and give you that big fake smile that immediately disappears behind a sneer. Have your mobile phone cam running when they deny you for not being Thai and send it to your favourite news and tourism organizations after posting on yourtube. MRT on the other hand is a fair and decent operation.

To extend it to Don Muang before the 97 crisis it would have to have been specially built for you, BTS didn't open until 1999.

Even foreigners can get 1/2 price on the MRT (not sure about senior discount for BTS and buses) in Thailand. Traveling by rail is free or near free for any Thai. Although Thailand is not the west, I assume you must be talking about Europe because in the US and Canada the discounts are typically 5 to 15% for seniors.
