You should go to Vientiane, Laos and obtain a two entry tourist visa if planning to stay that much longer.

Cheers for idea and I have thought of this but I have family in Hua Hin and want to stay for now sout area t Hua Hin area afterwards. Obviously open to ideas such as Vietnam possibly or somewhere just a bit closer? If I am posting back an answer to wrong place I apologise!!

You could go most places outside of Thailand to get a single entry but with extension that will only cover 90 days so you will have to go a second time by air to get another 30 day visa exempt entry. Remember Cambodia is not a good option if you are pressed for time as can take 3-4 days to issue.

Get a ferry to Krabi, from there you can catch a regular bus service to Hat Yai, there are plenty of Companies based around Hat Yai Bus Staion that do Mini Bus Trips to Penang/KL where you can get a Single Entry 60 Day Tourist Visa which can be extended by 30 Days at Thai Immigration - should not be a problem for most nationalities, particularly if you don't have any recent other Tourist Visas in your Passport.

The Thai Mini Bus service can be/is terrifying, but it's the cheapest option - you should allow three days for this exercise.

Stay closer to Hua HIn but forego a Vientiane run for a Vietnam one? OP needs to look at a map! If he considering Vietnam (where he will also need a visa), he needs to go through Suvarnabhumi. May as well take a flight from Don Muang to Udon and do the Vientiane hop. All takes around the same time IMHO but the latter will be lots cheaper.
