David48
One man’s trash, is another man’s treasure - the Dr Fish In one of the Farm’s Ponds, there was an infestation of what translates as ‘Doctor Fish’ ปลาหมอ - pla moor. Apparently some of the Thais love to eat them , but to the Farm Father they were simply eating the Prawns food ... So Farm Father gathered all hands, the blood brothers, the ‘honorary’ brother, daughter and grand-daughter to rid the Pond of these free loaders. Just thought you might be interested how the Thais do it ... .
David48
Not exactly sure how the pond was netted to this corner as we were in Bangkok the previous day and late starters on the morning, not arriving till 7.30 am. Left to right ... Farm Father, honorary brother and Farm Mother's younger brother. The grand-daughter helps out BTW ... all the BS about political correctness. Farm Father is jokingly referred to Khun Dumb and his honorary brother Khun Dumb Markk ... together Dumb and Dumber ... or translating as Black and really Black!

David48
You should have know from my past post that they fetch ฿70/kg farmgate right? Improvise David... Ha Ha Ha ... not my fish to sell! Actually, the smaller ones were minced for the catfish. The larger ones were deep fried and dished up to the Farm Family. I agree with you about the Farm Gate Sales ... however, due to difficult Farm access, Farm Gate sales are a practical reality. .
Popular Post David48
. The prawns are jumping madly and are encouraged to jump out of the net and back into the pond. The fish are corralled into a smaller and smaller net ... all 3 photos. Finally, MissFarmGirl with some running commentary ... Have to turn the sound up as she is very shy to speak her English to the camera. The next few photos have MissFarmGirl in it so I'll let her post them . If you or your partner speaks Thai ... they are having shots at his receding hairline. Apparently quite funny.

David48
Umm ... errr ... cough ... thanks for that MissFarmGirl ... What do they say in showbiz ... never with with animals, small children ... I might, to add, girlfriends ... So, the Dr Fish are corralled into a smaller and smaller net, all the time scooping the Prawns back into the main pond ... as per the photos below ... Then transferred into a holding basket in a different pond, below ... A lot of the smaller fish died during the course of the day and were minced and fed to the Catfish. The larger ones were eaten by the Farm Family. Dr Fish is a favourite of MissFarmGirl ... I couldn't determine an taste differential between them and other harvested fish. . . David48
Probably should introduce the Farm Father if you haven't met him before. . . Ex-Navy, lost the lower part of his leg down south (Thailand) when in active service. Consequently, a hard nut ... but a good nut. .
Popular Post David48
If you wanted to meet me ... here is a demo I did for MissFarmGirl to show here what I wanted in the video. And if you are wondering the T-Shirt is Yoda asking 'My finger you pull?' ... a gift from my niece. That's about it from the Dr Fish thread. We have a lot more photos and YouTubes ... but they are just variations on what you have above. We just wanted to share some of the Farm Life and how the Thai's deal with their day to day problems. David48
Thanks for the great pictures and videos by yourself and Miss farm girl. You know when I grow weary and frustrated by the comments on the general forum I know I can click on the farming forum for some sanity. ^^ Thanks for the nice comment. We (MissFarmGirl and I) just wish to show how the Thais do it in the daily grind. What I admire is the simplicity that the Thais approach their work with. Different from us. David48
Thank you David and MissfarmGirl for showing us your farm. Love the shot from 0.22 secs onwards showing the pond and the size....very impressive Actually, that was one of the smaller ponds you saw. ^^ The standard pond that MissFarmGirl parents own (or rent from their relatives) is 6 - 8 Rai ... size of a couple of football fields. There are some smaller ponds for the catfish and for the speciality Prawns/Shrimp.
