I am sure this has been covered by someone at some time, so apologies first if I am asking again.

I am 52 years old, English, and have lived in the LoS since November 1991. Previously, I was married to a Thai but we divorced in December 2003. At present I am living with a divorcee who has a son from her previous marriage to a Thai. We are not married but live together as a family.

I am here on a one-year visa and have a work permit. I work at the Northeastern Non-Formal Education Centre assisting with teaching, preparation of curricula, translation etc. I have had my work permit since 1995 [and one-year visas, of course].

Looking to the future, I will not receive a pension from the UK. Also, I do not intend to work here until the day I die! So, my current thought is to obtain a residency permit which, I believe, will allow me to be here without the need for one-year visas and a work permit. Ultimately, I would like to change nationality as I have no intention of leaving the country to return to the UK.

Is there anyone out there who can give me clear, concise instructions on how and where to apply for residency [and/or Thai nationailty]? What I have read in the past has only left me confused - but there, this is Thailand!

Thanks in advance to anyone who can lead me to my goal.

Peter.

The official procedure can be downloaded in word format from the Immigration department web site below:

Unofficially you are expected to have a very well paying job and have paid tax on it to be seriously considered from most reports.

Thanks lopburi3. I have downloaded the document and will read it later today. If I feel I need any more help, I'll be back !!

As vexing as it is, you will still need a work permit even though you have residency. The requirement for a work permit will only extinguish upon receipt of Thai citizenship.

Good luck with the process. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Cheers,

Bob
