Is it possible for a UK citizen (of Thai descent) to bring their Thai grandchild to the UK for settlement assuming that the grandparent entirely supports the grandchild even though the grandchild is over 18 years old and the grandchild has no other financial support?

Personally I think this is not possible and only children (not grandchildren) under 18 can be brought to the UK for settlement and Thai grandparents in some circumstances.

A visit visa I think would be possible for a max. of 6 months.

Sorry to ask a question where I think I know the answer but I would like to make sure.

Thanks.

From Adult dependent relatives.

You can apply for permission to settle permanently here (known as 'indefinite leave to enter or remain') if you are:

  • aged 18 or over; and
  • a parent, grandparent, brother, sister, son or daughter of a British citizen or person settled in the UK

So, grandchild? No.

Even for those who are on the list, it isn't easy

You can apply to join a settled person in the UK if:

  • You need long-term personal care to perform every day tasks, such as washing and cooking.
  • The care you need is not available in the country where you are living, either because it is not available and there is no person in the country where you are living who can reasonably provide it or it is not affordable.
  • Your sponsor can show that he or she is able to provide adequate maintenance, accommodation and care for you without having to rely on public funds. Your sponsor will need to sign a sponsorship undertaking form to confirm that they will be responsible for your care without relying on public funds for a period of at least 5 years.

In addition to the information supplied by 7by7, a visit visa for a six month visit would be difficult to obtain.

A visit visa is really meant for people wishing to go on a holiday, the full six months would be really pushing it.
