Vegas Taxis Caught "long Hauling" Passengers

Featured Replies

Would be nice if they could do some kind of taxi audit in Thailand. Samui is terrible for the prices and although I have never had a taxi in Bangkok do this to me I still get ones that refuse to take me.

Audit: Cabbies soaked passengers $14.8 million by long-hauling

An audit by a state agency found nearly a quarter of taxi trips from
the Las Vegas airport in 2012 involved illegal long-hauling in which
passengers were overcharged an estimated $14.8 million.

A report issued today by the audit division of the Legislative
Counsel Bureau said of 2,730 trip sheets reviewed by auditors, 614 of
them — 22.5 percent — included reports of drivers taking passengers on a
longer route than necessary.

This use to be a big problem in New York City also. One reason they went to a standard fare from the airport to the city. No negotiating.

Taxis in most major cities are a potential scam. I remember my $100 taxi ride in Moscow a few years ago. Basically rode me around for 10 minutes then pulled down his visor to show the rate for foreigners. The meter said something like $25. The rate card taped to his visor showed a different amount. What can you do?

Hence the audit is a brilliant idea. :) Not that it will happen but it sure is a good idea and nice to see that authorities realize this a problem and try to protect visitors

Every time I flew into Vegas for conventions this is what I took from the airport to the hotel at nearly taxi prices. Usually with a hot female chauffeur in all white, but that's not important. biggrin.png But that was a long time ago and can't imagine the prices now.

Great way to go!!!!

Worse Vegas taxi ride that never happened. Working the convention, had one hour for lunch. We lined up in the taxi que for 10 minutes, as half of every booth was going to lunch. Finally get cab, and he says, I am out of gas. First we are going to a gas station for fill up. I said like heck I was, got out and took the next cab in line.

This is like going to a restaurant and the chef says "I have to go shopping. I will be back later"!
