I was sat in the municipal offices in a small town called Wiang Pa Pao located between Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai on Friday. I was told to sit and wait for around 3 hours while an applications was being processed (I wont bore you with the details),

Pouring down in rain, but warm I heard beeping noises from a old red pickup up truck outside. I turn around and saw a hill tribes lady and her 7 kids dismount the pickup truck and walk into the offices.

For those who dont know, the hill tribes are treated pretty much like second class citizens in Thailand, they are frequently discriminated against and looked down generally as undesirables. Denied basic human rights and by the true definition of the word "stateless".

This lady walked into the room, where I was sat and walked right up to the head honcho Thai Bureaucrat and said in a very proud and non yeilding way "Friends of America".

The Thai Bureaucrat lady looked peedoff say the least and tried to direct the lady to Mai Sai, where she would be "processed".

No ! the Hill tribes lady said in the Queen of Englands, English. "I am with Friends of America and these are my rights". I want a Thai Passport and ID card application.

You can't just come and get one, the Thai Bureaucrat replied.

After a exchange that lasted around 5 minutes the Thai Bureaucrat supplied the application for a Thai Passport and ID Card and the woman said she cant read and write and would be back.

I have never head of "Friends of America" and dont know what work they are doing in Thailand, but this woman had courage and a sense of pride that I have rarely seen in a hilltribes woman, it was very impressive.

I usually write quite negative posts but on this occassion I just wanted to share. Have you come across this charity or had any dealing with them ?

If only the whole country would start standing up to bureaucrats society might change for the better. Actually, that goes for most countries.

You're right, every fallang should do this!!

If you are Thai you are Thai, if your tribe decides not to register you that's a shame on them. I completley understand your point but I believe my argument, have had various discussions and that's my conclusion to date!

It was great to witness in person, not a story told by someone else.

She had a great sense of self respect and confidence that just rattled the Thai Bureaucrat lady.

"Friends of America" and made her demands. Like she had been visited by the Arch Angel Gabriel and told her rights the night before. Her 7 kids were so supportive of their Mother too. It was beautiful to watch the Thai Bureaucrat lady get destoyed.

Now I dont know what paper she was given, neither did she, but she had been taught English and this was the language she used to communicate it.

Sorry but I think the hilltribe lady is out of order. She storms into an office, ranting about friends of America, whoever the heck they are, demanding a passport and Id card! That's rude. I bet the office thought sure, here's the paperwork, now get out. How bout waiting patiently like everyone else to be served.

It worked,so far as she got some forms to fill in.

It doesn't mean they will be processed, once completed.

Not only did it work, but unless more hilltribe people stand up for themselves, they will continue to be treated as second class citizens. The way they are treated is a disgrace.

But scary is that some American "NGO" are messing around. Alone the name "Friends of America" is scary.

the more you make them lose face, the more likely the forms will find the trash can.

perhaps her friends of america never taught her how to deal with people, next time their in the hills sucking on opium pipes and yippee weed they can educate her.

How bout the Thai Belgian friendship organization; is that scary as well? Perhaps you are just a timid person.

Or perhaps you are just anti anything connected to USA without knowing anything about it....more likely....

I think you win the prize for the most ignorant statement of the year so far.

The hill tribes are one of the most fascinating aspects of this country and Thailand is LUCKY to have them. They should treat them better and give them more opportunities then they wouldn't have to grow drugs, if that is the case. And if they do, how many army generals are RUNNING the whole operation????

Spoken like someone with no idea of context, past history, etc...

He talks about rudeness several days after implying I was lying about my teacher dying.

No thought for the fact whatsoever that it may be true.

cannot push in a line, but can make a nasty comment to someone who just lost someone very close to them.

I think you have me confused with someone else.

Do you mean like how the Aboriginal people are treated here in Australia? That sort of context. Like how they feel white Australia treats them? I do understand very well.Sorry but just like the op had to wait his turn at the office, so does everyone else. I also understand Thai offices seem to take forever to get served which is very frustrating. Bad luck, be patient and wait your turn.

Maybe ... Maybe not...

She go a piece of paper, not a Passport or an ID Card.

For all you know if could have just been a piece of paper advising the process and documents needed to apply for ID card or passport...

It might have been a piece of paper telling her to pull her head in and stand in line.

Wonder whom had the last laugh?

Yep, and I know how to fix both the awful Americans and the hill tribe dopers.

I'd give the Americans the opium to chill with, and the hill tribe people all AR-15's.

Maybe so, but has she ever been told this is not the way?

After all, being disrespected and unfairly threated is probably something she has learned as the way of life for her.

whose ignorant, I never said anything negative about the hill tribes.

I pointed out a fact that storming in there will not work, that is a far cry from saying I hate Hilltribes nor did I disrespect them.

Her attitude was wrong, she is blaming the poor woman behind the desk for her peoples wrongs, perhaps the woman behind the desk was a fan of Hilltribes before the lady stormed in and took out all her attitude on the her.

Now the smoking and growing of the opium there is a cultural thing, they do it, so what if I pointed that out,it's not making fun or putting them under me.

Think before you add people to your foolish quote of the year when your being a fool daily.

The suck on opium pipes, They smoke lantana and get of their chops, so what if I mention that, was it a secret.
