Hello all.

I am new to Issan as from last weekend.

I have lived in Thailand for 2 years bit fresh to the joys of Issan.

I will be living in Trakan Phutphon an area of Ubon Ratchathani and want to know if there is anything out here?

The lakes are beautiful and good for cycling but is there a gym?

I believe there is a swimming pool will hunt that down and also a zoo still to visit.

Eateries, what fine dining or any dining is there?

What are the other delights of Trakan Phutphon?

PM's or on the forum are welcomed if there is a gem you dont fancy sharing with the world ;-)

Thanks in advance

We have a house about 30 K from Trakan and until about this time last year stayed full time there. Now here in Ubon city for our daughters and grand daughters schooling.

Not a lot for foreigners in Trakan if you want something special.

There are some good Thai restaurants in town. Tesco express for shopping.

Thanks UbonJoe, yeah Tesco and a few restaurants is all it seems to have.

Went to the bright lights of Ubon City today and was surprised at its size and western influence.

Anyone else know of any hidden pearls?

Hidden pearls in Ubon do you mean? What sort of thing are you looking for?

Hidden pearls in Trakan if possible, tucked away restaurants, gyms or bars.

I will venture to Ubon at a later point and ask of hidden gems of the evening or things to see and do.

Thanks

For now though just Trakan please :D

Tiger zoo is 5km away, the bread knife wants to go tomorrow.

Thanks for your help and input. A response is better than a blank thread.

Cheers mate :D

No gym in Trakan that I know of.

I think you will be making regular trips to Ubon City. Trip is easy now. When I first moved up here it was a narrow 2 lane road with no shoulders.

Yeah 30 minutes to the big city ;-)

I didnt expect a gym but worth asking.

Went to the Tiger Zoo today, for 30 baht entrance fee it is simply the best value for money I have had in Thailand, its not great amazing or anything special but it has a nice jungle feel and canopy to cool you down if you dont think about the cages too much its a nice place to spend an hour.

Found a small swimming pool not too far from the Tiger Zoo heading back into Trakan on the same side.

Little things to make Trakan more bareable.

So far I have only noticed 50+ guys knocking around in Tesco and on scooters whizzing about. A lady at the market said she was shocked that I was 28 and that I looked younger. S'pose I am one of the youngest in this area.

More info and general wisdom much appreciated folks :D

  • 5 weeks later...

Agree not a lot here for foreigners, a couple of Thai Karaoke bars on the road to Si Muang Mai just out of town if that's your style, local Thai restaurants, no gym, pool on the town side of the zoo has recently changed hands and has been let run down, I took my son there last week and it was the pits, won't be back. I noticed that the golf driving range on the opposite side of town to the zoo and heading for Khemarat has also closed down.

All that aside it serves its purpose as a district center for a widely dispersed rural community - shopping, bigger market, banking etc. Anything much else it is a trip to the big smoke of Ubon.

I have been there on and off for 6 years now and live there when not working in BKK. PM me if you need advice, have questions. rgds feens
