Do you get sick of smoking the same strain?

Featured Replies

For those who smoke mainly indoor-grown cannabis, where there can be wide differences in THC levels, terpenes, and taste, do you eventually get tired of smoking the same strain, or if you find a good one, do you just stick with it?

For me, after about 10–20g of one strain, I like to switch. I don’t necessarily get tired of it, but the smells, flavors, and strength of the high can vary so much, so I enjoy changing things around. I don’t mind coming back to the same strain later if it’s a really good one, but I like having a few different strains to rotate through.

I figure it doesn’t make as much difference with outdoor-grown flower or eVap. The THC isn’t particularly high to begin with, and a lot of those grows don’t have much smell or flavor anyway.

Feel exactly the same. I have always switched up between what strains I am using. Now the problem I find is that all the strains on FIS 420 are so close to the same. They are all good. very good but not the best. The smell is less, the taste less and the high less. Yes surely they do work but I dont get that initial rush I always look forward to. I am thinking of getting some better quality Sativa just to have around and get that initial high. Cheers.

Thanks. I tried some of their stuff about a year ago. I think it’s eVap. I got about five or six different types and, as you said, they all seemed pretty much the same. There wasn’t much smell or resin to speak of, and most of it was a bit dry.

It does the job if you smoke enough of it, but I think the issue is also that, over time, your tolerance increases. When you first started smoking, you’d probably take a hit or two of anything and be off your head. But now it takes a bit more. And if you’d been smoking some stronger stuff for a while and then switched over to some of that eVap, that might be why it doesn’t feel as strong.

So it could be a couple of things at play, not just the strength of the cannabis, but also the fact that your tolerance has probably increased, plus you’ve got used to stronger stuff. Unfortunately, there in lies the rub.

I now get mine from a supplier in my area. It costs a bit more, but they only sell indoor-grown stuff, so the strength, taste and smell are always pretty solid. But even with the slightly pricier stuff, you don’t really end up spending that much if you compare it to what people spend on alcohol, or even one latte at Starbucks. What I spend on it over a few days probably adds up to the cost of one overpriced coffee drink, so it’s not like I’m really splashing out. 😊

Depends on the strain.

Some strains have more novelty appeal.

But after smoking them for awhile they don't seem as good.

Other strains such as Permanent Marker or Supreme Grape always work.

But yeah, rotate my medicine seems to work best.

Usually try 50+ new strains a year.

50+ a year sounds like a lot. But that must be fun to try 4-5 different types per month. Always changing it up. One thing I'm weary of these days are any that smell fruity. The ones that wreak a bit like petrol are usually right on the money though.

Before all the legalization, late 90's-2010, I used to buy old style Thai brown bricks. Not kidding a brick of brown weed for 300thb. 2+ ounces, take a couple puffs off a doob, pass it on. Knock you out otherwise.

Bought green out of a dispenser Rawai 2025, could've gotten higher holding my breath.

They still sell the weed you bought in the 90s here. Yeah, you're right it used to be cheaper, but so was everything. Soup used to be 5 thb a bowl, too.

Yeah I bought some "Thai stick" for 15thb per gram earlier this year. Super high creeper stuff. The very sativa buds about the size of a matchstick head. Nothing at all like the Afghani hybrids that look like a carpet of trichromes. Hardly any on the Thai stick. Yet, it gets you higher than <deleted>

Planning on rolling up a 10g joint of some different Thai stick on my birthday.

One hit should do it. 🤪

I used to enjoy the high you'd get from bud back in the 60's and 70's, like Thai-stick and brick weed. I must be getting older, but I've never found bud here that compares, I just can't get high, so I don't even bother anymore.

I disagree with that 100%... outdoor grown bush in volcanic soil and outdoor grown bush in self mulching soil and outdoor grown bush in a little, hippy lady soil that she has been building up year after year each have distinctive taste and each of them will blow the socks off the indoor grown stuff in terms of a good or bad stone.... it's the imperfections in the outdoor grown that make them perfect as opposed to the indoor stuff that ends up all tasting the same in my humble opinion... others may disagree and I am open to reading what they have to say.

Much of what is called sativa in today's market is not really sativa.

Careful is all im getting at.

Main reason they all taste the same is because they basically are all the same. Todays strains have been cross bred and bastardized so much that many of the unique tastes etc have been bred out so that the high precent thc is all that remains.

Terpenes is the key to your happiness 😁

I know Sativa bro and I am willing to pay for it. Have an order in and am waiting at Fatbuds right now. Havent bought much there, but have gotten to know the head budtender. A lot of private messages after meeting him. Thanks for your wise thoughts.

The first weed I ever grew was from landrace Acapulco gold. The seeds were ours. Got about 20 pounds on a west facing hill in Cohasset California, 25 miles east of Chico ca. 1,000 feet up. Funded my first trip here, Malaysia, Burma and Nepal. 3 months and I was addicted to Asia.

There is very little real sativa being sold in the cannabis market now a days. Many claims are made but they are just that.

Bro.

I’d actually say it’s the opposite from my experience. The eVap outdoor grown cannabis I’ve had has generally tasted and smelled fairly similar from one batch to another. With indoor grown cannabis, I notice much stronger smells and a lot more variety, with roughly six broad aroma and flavor profiles based on the different terpene combinations.

Some are fruity, often influenced by myrcene and ocimene, while others have a strong citrus character from terpenes such as limonene. Some have that distinctive pine scent associated with pinene, while others are more earthy, herbal or spicy, with compounds such as myrcene, humulene and caryophyllene contributing to those characteristics. Then you get the fuel or diesel type aromas, and finally the really pungent garlic and skunky varieties. Those latter aromas can also involve volatile sulfur compounds rather than terpenes alone.

So rather than all indoor grown cannabis tasting the same, I find that it actually has a much wider range of distinct aromas and flavors than the eVap grown cannabis I’ve experienced.

All credit to the nose mate if that's what you smell...... I read that and I could've sworn it should've been for some fancy smansi wine connoisseur snob review.

That was the seventies and early eighties you're think of, mate. All a thing of the past. Nowadays it's science.

It's become a lot more nuanced than most people realize. To me, wine is just minging fermented grapes, and honestly, none of it smells particularly good. But after the last 30 to 40 years of selective crossbreeding of different cannabis strains, breeders have developed an enormous range of varieties with very different aromas and flavors, largely because of their different terpene profiles and the other volatile compounds that I mentioned.

At this point, I think many of these flavor profiles are produced intentionally. Growers and breeders seem to have learned which genetics produce particular aromas and flavors, and they selectively breed them to develop the characteristics they want.

That said, I’ve smelled some cannabis in Thailand that smelled exactly like mangoes, and I suspect some of it may have been treated with artificial flavoring or fragrance.

If it doesn’t have at least a little bit of that characteristic cannabis funk to it, I’d be suspicious that what I’m smelling isn’t entirely natural.

If you really want to understand what I’m talking about, rather than dismissing it as connoisseur fluff, put the landrace stuff aside for a minute and try five different indoor grown strains. The differences in their aromas and flavors should immediately become pretty obvious.

Yeah, I agree. Just stick with the 2 Baht-a-gram stuff. Maybe even go for the 1 Baht-a-gram stuff if they have any available. Trim is even better because it costs even less. It all tastes exactly the same, so it makes absolutely no difference. And THC at 5% versus 10% or 25%? Again, not a single bit of difference. Nobody can ever tell any of them apart. The only thing that matters is that you’re spending no more than 60 Baht for an ounce! And screw all those bloody socialists and homosexuals, even though they have absolutely nothing at all to do with the smell, taste and potency of cannabis. Screw them all to hell!

Brah, all I do is throw pot seeds out the damn window, wait for the neighbors’ chickens to saunter over and crap all over them, and before you know it I’ve got 8 foot Mary Jane trees spread across the bloody garden. Doesn’t cost me a cent. I’m still using seeds from the same original plant from the old school weed I bought in a nickel bag back in 1972 down on Canal Street. Finest Colombian FARC brick weed you’ll ever find. It’s an OG strain, loaded with twigs and seeds, and never crossbred. Pure, authentic genetics. Gets you high for about half a second, but hey, you can’t put a price on tradition.

More like week old cheetah piss. Tell you what, some of that weed and a feline of the camel-toe variety, and it’s quite the experience. Shared a joint of that with one of those species last night. We were both absolutely baked. Might I even say it was a bit too much for me, and rarely do I say that. She smoked three-quarters of the spliff, too. At first she seemed unfazed, although loved it. Eventually I was amazed she could still even function, although barely, mentally speaking. Physically, however… went off like a barn door in a storm. Proper.

Next time I go under the hood on that unit, I think I’d like to be considerably less wasted, so I can actually remember all the moving parts of the gear box a little better. She had the perfect keister, like ferrets in a gunny sack.

BS; <deleted> weed 10 , 20, 30 years ago was 20,000+/kilo

its MUCH better and a fraction of the cost now
haven't seen real Thai stick since the 70's

much of the weed i have smoked in the past few years tastes similar, looks similar but some smells different,
no problem, i am quite happy with paying >10 baht.gram to get high and have a good sleep

Then you haven't smoked any Mowie Wowie.

I smoke 50+ strains a year.

In 2022 in Northern California, Mowie Wowie was my #2 favorite strain behind Flo White.

Mowie is essentially from Thai stick seeds that were crossed to whatever else they had growing there prior to the 70s.

MW is as good if not better than the original.

Very uplifting Thai sativa runway.

Like I said, I've probably smoked thousands of different strains in my life.

You don't know what you are talking about. 😄

Memories "improve" over time.

I smoked some REAL Thai stick

Red thread

Wrapped around bamboo skewer

Mostly seedless, maybe one or two seeds per stick

Long slender buds, green, gold, reddish brown

Thought it was GREAT 👍

Then went to a George Benson jazz concert

Free ticket. Right up front.

Maybe 15 feet in front of Benson sitting on a stool on a Persian carpet with his band behind him.

Thought he was great, too.

Guess what? George Benson was slop.

Crap, derivative music.

He stole hooks, copied so much without doing anything new.

Definitely the Ted Nugent of Jazz.

Just listen to this 1977 crap today

Shudder. 😄

I definitely prefer switching up every week or 2.

If I keep using the same strain for more than a couple of weeks, I feel that I don't get the same 'kick' from it. Just a few puffs from a new strain and I feel that I get higher than twice the # of puffs of a strain I've been using for 2 weeks.
