Military informant shot dead on his motorcycle in Pattani

PATTANI, May 4 -- A military informant was shot dead on his motorcycle in Pattani while riding from his home in Mayo district to a tea shop.

The victim was identified as Mr Wayeh Doloh, 50, a resident of Pattani's Mayo district.

Police who rushed to the scene after being reported of the incident said that Mr Wayeh was shot on the rural road after two assailants on motorcycle followed him and shot him before fleeing the scene.

When the police arrived, his body was sent to the hospital.

After inspection of the crime scene, police found two bullet cases.

Police said that they initially believed that the incident was a retaliation by an insurgent group in the area because the victim was an informant who had given important information to soldiers.

In the nearby province of Narathiwat, a rice truck driver was attacked and killed with an M-16 assault rifle while he was driving to deliver rice from Yala to Narathiwat.

He was identified as Mr Abdullah Pataebuenae, a 59 years old resident of Yala's provincial seat.

His six-wheel truck was found at the roadside of Rueso-Jakua road riddled with bullets.

His body was 20 metres away from the vehicle.

Police found nine M16 bullet case scattered at the scene.

According to the initial investigation, Mr Abdullah was driving his truck from Yala to Narathiwat but when arriving the scene, two assailants on motorcycle sprayed M16 bullet into his truck.

Mr Abdullah was wounded and tried to escape into the woods, but the militants followed and shot him before leaving the scene. (MCOT online news)

PHUKET: -- After previous editions in Cairo, Delhi, Manila, Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires, the World Buffalo Congress will this year make its way to Thailand, where Phuket will host the triennial event at the Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort and Spa in Karon from May, 6 to 8.

Drug suspects killed in shootout

CHIANG RAI: -- Five drug suspects were killed yesterday in a gunfight between a smugglers' caravan and the Pha Mueang Task Force in Chiang Rai's Mae Fa Luang district. Following the 2.30am gunfight on Ban Alae forestland in Tambon Mae Salong Nok, the officers waited until morning to clear the area.

They found the bodies of five suspects killed in the shootout and seized at least four guns, along with 7,000 yaba pills and Bt1 million in cash. Meanwhile, in Nakhon Phanom's Ban Paeng district Saturday, police arrested three men in a pickup truck that was carrying 31,425 yaba pills.

Surapong off to Washington to meet Kerry

BANGKOK: -- Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Surapong Towichukchaikul will officially visit the United States next week to introduce himself to his counterpart, Secretary of State John Kerry. Matters to be discussed during the visit include a framework for bilateral cooperation on issues ranging from terrorism to transnational crime and human trafficking.

Surapong said the issue of cross-border human trafficking was very important as Thailand has been stuck on the second tier of countries on a US human-trafficking watchlist for the past two years. The minister said he hoped to be able to convince Kerry that Thailand was tackling the issue with utmost seriousness.
