March 22, 200620 yr I am newly amazed at my internet speed with dial up LOXINFO, so I checked with : testmy.net and get speeds of 86 kbps. Is this possible on a 56K modem? Or should I just be happy and shut up? It is really fast rather like a UK broadband connection. Maybe I have a new line or fibreoptic link or something, anyone notice the same? I am in Nongprue, Pattaya, Chon Buri.
March 22, 200620 yr I doubt it. A 56k modem transfers at 56k or less Modem data is compressed up to as much as 4X (effective speed). This is why you need to set your comm port speed to 2 to 4 times faster then the modems rated speed for full throughput. I specified a range because many PCs can not set the port speed to greater then 115K. So it is possible but usually by not much due to other compression in the internet stream including PPP compression (if running in that mode). Example: I have a 56k modem but due to phone line quality I only get a 33.6k connection. However, running Internet speed tests I get an effective throughput of 48k. http://www.digit-life.com/articles/compressv44vsv42bis/ Modem tweaks: http://www.inboost.com/speed-tweaks/modem-tweaks.html Edited March 22, 200620 yr by tywais
