Trump snubs Vance for 2028 says: ‘It’s too early’

President refuses to back his own vice-president for 2028 — but calls JD Vance “fantastic”

Donald Trump has refused to endorse Vice President JD Vance for the 2028 presidential race, telling reporters simply: “It’s too early.”

The blunt response came as Trump prepared to leave Ireland following his visit to the Irish Open at his Doonbeg golf resort.

Asked on the tarmac at Shannon Airport whether he was ready to “throw his weight” behind Vance for 2028, Trump immediately rejected the suggestion.

“It’s too early. I mean, it’s too early. I think he’s terrific. There’s so many terrific people,” Trump said.

Pressed further, he added: “JD is fantastic and did a very good job.”

Trump keeps the succession question open

The comments are unlikely to settle the increasingly obvious question of who will inherit the Trump movement when his presidency ends.

Vance, 42, is widely regarded as one of the leading potential Republican candidates for 2028.

But he is far from alone.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Texas Senator Ted Cruz, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton, Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Georgia Governor Brian Kemp are among the Republicans whose names have been discussed as possible contenders.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has also been linked to a possible 2028 campaign, although he has denied reports that he is considering a run.

And then there are the wildcard possibilities, including conservative commentator Tucker Carlson and Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr.

The timing is what makes it interesting

Trump's refusal comes just weeks before the 2026 midterm elections, with Republicans facing the possibility of losing control of the House and potentially the Senate.

The president has been campaigning heavily for Republican candidates and recently made headlines by promising voters $5,000 “dividends” if Republicans retain control of Congress.

Yet when it came to the person most frequently mentioned as his potential successor, Trump chose not to give him the political equivalent of a head start.

That does not necessarily mean Trump has turned against Vance.

Quite the opposite: he went out of his way to call his vice-president “terrific” and “fantastic.”

But Trump knows better than most that once a presidential succession race begins, the political spotlight can move very quickly.

For now, he appears determined to keep the 2028 race exactly where he wants it:

wide open.

Perhaps Trump just wants to shorten the window for some unhinged lefty to shoot Vance.

Depends on who can give him the biggest % of the skim...

If Vance made him an offer he couldn't refuse (Thiel got a copy of the Peepee Tape) then he'd just resign and let Werewolf Mascara Boy finish out his term

It makes sense to not hang his hat just yet.........he can play the candidates for a good while longer and he avoids anything cropping up that could be embarrass him .......he wouldn't want a situation where he had defend the indefensible or be seen to pull the plug........imagine if it came to light that Vance was some kind of religious fruit loop!
