I tried to buy an item that i saw advertised on TV as i thought oooh thats a good idea, i'll have one of those... I went through the online retailers website, found it all in Thai and through the help of google translate, managed to order the item.

I put in all required details, and submitted, only to receive an email asking for a scan of my passport and a scan of the credit card.

In my mind credit cards are highly sensitive item and there is no way i would let someone get a copy of my credit card no matter the reasoning...

Said retailer then said oh sorry this is procedure... but my comment would be that its credit card company procedure not to hand out copies of the card...

End result - i had to cancel the order from Lazada, despite me sending verification of my identity.

anyone had a similarly seemingly weird encounter with online purchasing?

But when I use a card online I nearly always have to enter the full card number, the 3 digits on the back, the expiry date and my name. Not much more information in a scan I don't think. Of course, a company like that really ought to be using a proper online payment system though.

I had already put all that information in... this was an additional step following the actual payment process... hence my hesitation to submit it...

Anyone submitting the details requested in the OP leaves themselves wide open to ID theft with very little comeback. If the company in question wants to be taken seriously on the world stage they should stop this mickey mouse practice forthwith.

As a rule of thumb I use my home CC when purchasing online and only make purchases from companies that can be pursued in UK/EU etc if ever there was a problem.

Several banks in Thailand offer electronic virtual Visa cards specifically for using on Internet. You can set the limit on these yourself. Kasikorn Bank offer this service, together with an option to manage your card and the available limit via the Internet banking feature. With Kasikorn Bank comes the ability to create one of these cards yourself via your Internet Banking. My advice is to get one of these cards, set a limit just before using it and then reset it to zero directly after the purchase.

If you go with the Kasikorn Bank option, pay attention to the smooth process of acquiring it...
