Superiors Of Bribes Taking Bangkok Traffic Police Officer Transferred

One thing I don't understand is, the Government sets penalties for offences and it gives the police the power to impose these penalties and the revenue goes into government coffers. Surely the police minister know that the police are freelancing (the rest of the world does) and offering 50 - 75% discounts for cash. This cash going straight into the pockets of the police in which they hired to collect revenue for them.

The Government is losing millions if not a few billion over the years of money they need for other projects. Why on earth hasn't the government seen this loss and come down with the biggest hammer on earth? You steal from a goverment in the western world and they will hang and quater you along with your 1st born.

Is the Government turning a blind eye and simply accepting this as normal Thai behaviour?

Actually the system here was changed a couple of years ago so that official fines if collected half of the money goes into a pool which is then dived among the station. Problem is in ChiangMai a couple of years ago one of their own absconded with the pool.

I'd sooner bribe an understanding cop, than pay and pay and pay the modern bureaucratic, socialist, marxist, technocratized, democratic State, like we have in Australia. Our government just "lost" 21 billion dollars or "our" money. I wonder where that went? No explanation!!

That's nothing is it? Leave the Thai cops alone or you'll end up like us . . Not only do you pay, you lose your license for "no crime" . .

So there was no problem, just relocated. Surprise surprise! Same same.

Interesting, at first, he was fired for good headlines. Now only transferred. I'm sure the transfer didn't make the headlines outside.

Rotten to the core from top to bottom. The Royal Thai Police is a national disgrace and their nefarious activities are well known and documented which indict both the Government and Thai society as a whole

They are but a reflection/microcosm of society in general so Jay yen yen and sabai sabai with a big smile.

This thread really shows how little people know about Thailand or living here.

Money talks here. It always will.

I find the outrage about 'corruption' highly amusing and very telling that maybe some of the ten-bob millionaires here can't even afford to bung the plod 200 - 1000 Baht when they get stopped....

Police are often transferred to different police stations over periods of time as matter of routine. So all these actions mean nothing.

The policeman involved should have been instantly sacked, charged and prosecuted, but instead, they are playing the out of sight, out of mind game.

Rotten apples, in the dirty basket. Outrageous.

More interesting news would be,-Where have the superiors been transferred to ???? and what role are they playing ???---should be in the BKK Hilton. Telling posters that action has been taken--WHAT ACTION ???? any news on this, ME thinks posters would be over the moon if we were given the end of the story NOT just Transferred

The police officer concerned, will probably have his hand slapped and told; next time be more discrete and don`t get caught again.

Being transferred is the end of the story and that`s the last we`re hear about the case. Trust me on this one.

I think it shows that people DO know, it's just that they care, unlike you who seem to just accept the status quo and having cr@p dumped on you constantly . . . and simply accepting it.

Actually, you have a comprehension problem - too much sauce? Who says one can't afford 100 or 200, which is beside the point anyway . . . ah, no point, you're not corpus mentis enough to understand.

Keep feeding the machine and enjoy being a victim

I don't see the problem...

Bung them a couple of hundred and on your way....would you rather the UK/US style alternative???

The problem is that the people they are extorting have uausally done nothing wrong! They abuse their authority, and their own people. Mafia in uniforms.

As HeavyDrinker already said . . . would you prefer the UK/US way (are there only two countries in the world aside from Thailand?) style alternative where you don't get pulled over and robbed routinely by people in authority?

Pfft, you have to live life on the edge . . . clearly on the edge of alcoholic oblivion

10 years of driving here and a couple thousand Baht given out on my part. They are indeed greedy little monkeys. They get a gleeful look on their faces and their little monkey paws squiggle in delight when they see the cash.

My old dad used to say "If you have half a mind to join the police force, you'll fit right in."

The rates of pay are appropriate for the job, raising them will not stop greed or corruption. What HAS been proven to work is an Internal Affairs/Ethical Standards/Complaints section selected for integrity and used in plain clothes with concealed video/audio recording leading to convictions with loss of job and all benefits. The use of roll-overs to help entrap their mates has done a lot to improve the "quality" of NSW police.

It is also useful to note that it is standard for NSW Highway Patrol to record ALL conversations with offenders.

So, in typical Thai fashion, nothing really changes. The transferred people now get to take bribes from people in a different part of town. If anything has been learned, it is to look around for cameras before taking a bribe. LOL

A neighbour returning home from work on a new Honda Air Blade M/Cycle got stopped and had to pay 200 bht.

The reason he was stopped was he didn't have mirrors on the bike-BECAUSE when at work they were stole from it, Honda shop was closed, and told the Bib, that as soon as Honda was open he would re-new. The bib was NOT interested.

If in normal circumstances Knowing the bike was new, the bib should have understood. HERE never---MONEY as we know is the KEY.

The Thai police are becoming allergic to camera’s due to things like this, which is a good thing. I installed a dash camera before heading up to Isaan for Song Khran, mostly for the idiots on the road in case of an accident. The unexpected bonus was as pulling into several of the police stops the officer would have a big smile, probably thinking falang=double bonus.

The moment they spotted the camera they would quickly face away and a hand would come out to wave me on. Total times through a police stop about 20 over the week, total bribes paid zero. Good fun downloading the video onto the laptop and showing the family during afternoon drinks, even the neighbours were getting invited around to watch. By my reckoning I have already saved about half the cost of the camera.

Cheers

Have'nt gone through all the posts here but I don't understand the element of surprise or outrage. These cops are low level street hustlers, its far worse up the food chain and getting worse, even in education teachers and school directors are expecting bribes, I do get outraged when out in the provinces the local police extort the few baht local people have coming or going to market..
