:o I was under the impression that was the Thai spelling.

Thai does not use a Roman alphabet. There are so many different transliteration systems for Thai that it is difficult to know the meaning without seeing the name in the original alphabet. Otherwise, it would be at best an educated guess.

Family names came fairly recently, in the past 150 years, to most ethnic Thai families and the family names were supplied by the goverenment. Even today the government supplies "Thai" family names to minorities who are bestowed Thai citizenship. My brother-in-law changed my wife's family name to a more Thai sounding family name just 15 years ago as the non-Thai family name had become an obstacle to promotion. Nobody in the family knows what it means in Thai, but it sounds nice.

Many of these names are not easy to parse as some of the segments are from some rather obscure Pali sources. We do have a few Pali-Sanskrit scholars posting here, but as others noted, you must post in Thai for them to figure out the correct roots.

Many of the Thai-Chinese family names combine the Chinese name with Thai-Pali words, often words in association with the meanings of the Chinese name, and often words referring to, what else, but financial success.

I too have created Thai last names for my two-dimensional online persona. There as been Johpa Bulsittalota as well as Johpa Deumlaokeng. I have another pal who has chosen Krakadon. As the Thai government has come up with some equally preposterous last names for minorities, please feel free to create your own Thai family name.

I was under the impression that the word 'Thai' is a common component of Thai-Chinese surnames.

ไถ้บ้านกวย

follow the royal institue dictionary

ไถ้ = a small or big bag use for carry money or other stuff ..and hang it at the waist

บ้านกวย = for my opinion , it sounds lke a village's name
