Next week the girlfriends going to Singapore for a shopping trip with friends. I was panning on flying up to CM/CR for a Motorbike tour.

The route i was thinking of is something like Chiang Mai - Chiang Dao - Phrao - Phayao - Phu Lang Ka - Nan - Phrae - Lampang - Chiang Mai. Might split off to Chiang Kong also if i have time. Fond memories of that little town.

Im planning on taking a week to do it.

So the questions are:

What do you think of this route? Have i missed anywhere i shouldn't have? Is there anywhere on my itinerary you wouldn't recommend i include?

And finally, is it really the wrong time of year to be riding a bike in the province? Hope not.

Look forward to thoughts, opinions and advice.

Cheers

I would definitely recommend driving from Nan to Chiang Kham on the 1148. From there the 1093 would take you past Phu Sang Waterfall, Phu Chi Fa, and Pha Tang. Continuing on the 1155 you can take the back way into Chiang Khong.

From Chiang Dao you could alternatively continue on the 107 to the 1089 and take it in to Doi Mae Salong and Doi Tung. There are so many great roads it is hard to choose and linking them all together can make for a very long ride.

It has been hot as hell lately, with the odd thunderstorm, but the roads are in good shape and as long as you keep your speed up a little you are creating your own breeze. You will no doubt hit some rain but it may end up being a welcome respite from the heat. The sky is pretty clear so you should get some great views.

I say go for it.thumbsup.gif

We have a topic for trip reports and I’m sure your trip would make a great addition, or you could start your own. Looking forward to some pics.smile.png

As for the shopping trip, I sympathize. My wife won’t return home until monday from a similar trip to Hong Kong and Macao.wink.png

Just looking into it. Will certainly take the 1093. Is the 1129 Chiang Saen worth the detour north? Could maybe loop in Chiang kong then down the 1093 that way...

There has been a lot of roadwork in the Chiang Saen area and I haven’t been there recently so don’t know the conditions. Unless it is muddy and pouring down rain it can be a nice drive along the river. Maybe someone who lives out that way will offer an update on road conditions from Chiang Saen to Chiang Khong.

Thanks, i'd be interested as i don't want to spend out on a "Big bike" so the new Wave 125 i rent might have a few issues. Although it should be sufficient for most...

A 650 or even a 250 would have more power, better suspension and tires, providing a much more comfortable ride but many guys do long trips on smaller bikes, so you should be okay.smile.png

On a budget at the mo as heading home for 6 months soon. Wanted to do this trip for a while. Not looking to spend 7000B on motorbike rental. I have my own in Phuket. 250 might be okay though.

Phaya Mengrai took a shower in preparation for your trip. How are your plans progressing?

Still, in general seems like its drier in Chang rai than Phuket. We're having heavy downpours most days. I have a one way flight booked for Chiang mai next Tuesday. Looking forward to a peaceful break alone.cool.png

Heading to Chiang mai on Wednesday, i hope the weather holds out.

Is there a reasonable supply of fuel on these rural roads? I don't seem to remember having any problems last time i took a route like this, just don't want to get caught out in the middle of nowhere.. Souldn't need to carry spare fuel should i?? Thanks

Fuel can be found almost anywhere, so no need to worry about that. In smaller villages look for the glass dispensers like these.

I would guess Paangjang is getting good dose of Mother Nature as he makes his way down the road. Stay safe and take lots of pictures.smile.png
