Intensifying conflicts foreseen: poll

BANGKOK: -- The Thai public foresees intensifying political conflicts following opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva's notion that said a general election may take place late this year.

The Yingluck government took office in August 2011.

Of 1,316 respondents, 43.35 per cent believed that Abhisit’s notion would intensify political conflicts while 20.23 per cent said that the government’s performance will indicate if there will be a premature general election.

Rising living cost shakes Govt

Higher cost of living is cited as a major reason that could weaken the government's support, according to a poll by Assumption University.

Higher cost of living is the biggest cause for 85.2 per cent of the 2,115 respondents in 17 provinces: while charter amendment (81.9 per cent) is the second.

Unofficial hearing on Krabi power plant

KRABI: -- Senator Boonsong Kowawisarat, chairman of the Senate Committee on natural resources and environment, on Sunday led a delegation to Krabi, to hear public concerns over the planned construction of an 800-megawatt coal-fired power plant in the province.

Accompanying him were a sub-committee. Both local residents and representatives from the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand - which owns the project - presented their cases.

University students vow against cheating

BANGKOK: -- Executives and students at 27 universities vow against "cheating", ready to support national anti-corruption campaigns.

Together, they signed the declaration on Sunday at Thammasat University’s stadium, to launch the campaign "Thai students not cheating".

Thammasat rector Somkid Lertpaitoon likens the campaign to the vaccination. Upon graduation, these students would be quality workers who are immune to all types of corruption.

Anti-corruption would be included in the curriculum and the student network plans events in different regions every three months.

A poll by Assumption University showed that a\mong students, 92.4 per cent admitted that they did copy their friends' reports in the past 12 months. Some 74.9 per cent cheated in the exams. The poll showed that seed of corruption is seen among students, teachers, government officers and company employees.

Thaksin to make phone call to address red-shirt rally at Ratchaprasong

BANGKOK: -- Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has announced he would make a phone call to address a red-shirt rally at the Ratchaprasong Intersection Sunday evening.

He posted messages on his Twitter page that he would talk about several issues that he has not recounted to his supports yet.

He apologised to Bangkokians that the rally, which will be held to mark third anniversary of the Ratchaprasong crackdown, would cause traffic congestion.

Probe into Narathiwat hotel bombing underway

NARATHIWAT, May 19 -- Narathiwat governor Apinan Suetanuwong on Sunday said that an investigation into yesterday's bombing of the Asia Hotel in Su-ngai Kolok district is underway, with six suspects taken in for questioning.
