Anti-narcotics police confiscate 600,000 meth pills, former local official arrested

CHIANG RAI, 27 May 2013 (NNT) -- Chiang Rai Anti Narcotics Police arrested a former member of the Tambon Khirirat Administrative Organization of Tak Province for his involvement with illegal drug trade. They seized more than 600,000 methamphetamine pills on the scene.

The drug raid was a joint operation of Chiang Rai police force, Immigration officials, and anti narcotics police. It was headed by Police General Preaopan Damapong (เพรียวพันธ์ ดามาพงษ์), and Commander of Anti Narcotics Police, Police Lieutenant General Chaiwat Chotima (ชัยวัฒน์ โชติมา).

The arrest was made on Phahonyothin Road in Chiang Rai. Police erected a check point on the route in order to intercept the drug caravan, following intelligence information. A total of four suspects were apprehended together with three cars and the drugs packed in rice sacks hidden in the cars.

Among the suspects was a Hmong tribesman, Mr. Lee Saema (หลี่ แซ่ม้า), also former local administration official from Tak province.

The 600,000 meth pills and the three sedans were confiscated during the raid.

The suspects confessed they received the drugs from Mae Suai (แม่สรวย) District and were to deliver the pills to Bangkok for a million baht payout.
