At least sixteen people were reported dead, according to the Sakal Times. The number of victims remains uncertain, but authorities believe more than 30 people were on the bus at the time of the accident. Among those killed were eight men, six women and two children.

Preliminary reports indicate the bus was traveling toward Mumbai when the gas tanker, coming from the opposite direction, lost control while managing a curve and collided against the bus. The powerful impact caused the side of the luxury bus to tear off, as it veered down the highway and into a river, trapping the passengers.
