MUMBAI, INDIA (BNO NEWS) -- At least sixteen people were killed after a passenger bus accident in western India, local media reported on Wednesday.

The accident occurred on Wednesday morning at around 7 a.m. local time when a private luxury bus collided with a gas tanker on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway in the district of Thane in the state of Maharashtra.

At least sixteen people were reported dead, according to the Sakal Times. The number of victims remains uncertain, but authorities believe more than 30 people were on the bus at the time of the accident. Among those killed were eight men, six women and two children.

Preliminary reports indicate the bus was traveling toward Mumbai when the gas tanker, coming from the opposite direction, lost control while managing a curve and collided against the bus. The powerful impact caused the side of the luxury bus to tear off, as it veered down the highway and into a river, trapping the passengers.

Search-and-rescue operations supervised by Resident Deputy Collector Manoj Gohad and Additional Collector Ashok Shingare moved quickly into the scene.
