I am traveling out to Kuala Lumpur tomorrow and want to Skype with my GF and baby while she goes home to Songka. She has a Tab2 (Samsung) which we bought in March (so the whole thing is kind of new to me), I have no idea what to buy (a SIM and a minutes card?) or where to buy it or if it wil even work there. Right now, we just use it on our home network in Bangkok. I am sure I can figure out how to work the skype part and show her but no one in her family there has an internet connection even. Any advice greatly appreciated.

One reason I am asking is because I can not find any where, if I can use my phone to call her long distance from KL (not a smart phone, Dtech sim card). If anyone has any idea about how that works it would be good as well as I want to have a back up plan.

Can you share any details?

What is the exact model number of your Tab 2? We need this to determine if it is WiFi-only or WiFi + 3G.

Is Songka the same as Songkhla (in Hat Yai Province)?

You should be able to get a pre-paid SIM in Malaysia: Digi, Maxis, etc. Or you could enable international roaming on your DTAC? (Thai) SIM.

Does your wife currently have a smartphone? If so, what is the exact make and model?

I think he means Sangkha

Understood, I overlooked the "Surin" modifier.

TrueMove H/CAT may have 3G coverage in parts of Sangkha district.

Yes I do, sorry didn't know the spelling. She has a Tab GT-P3100, as far as I know it has G3 capabilities (but now you making wonder why I think that, lol, I seem to remember seeing it somewhere in settings or something?).

Does your wife have a smartphone? If yes, please provide the make and model.

The GT-P3100 does appear to support 3G, however just 900/2100 MHz so TrueMove H/CAT (850 MHz) is not possible. She could use AIS/One-2-Call or DTAC/Happy for low speed (2G) mobile data, but not sure Skype works on 2G? Even on 3G you might use up your mobile data allowance quite quickly. Maybe best to make regular telephone calls? You could even get a calling card here before you leave?

No she doesn't have a smart phone, this was supposed to double as one when we bought it, I did find it has G3 capabilities too but I didn't see the bolded so THANK YOU!. Looking at the maps of happy and AIS now and it looks like they don't have coverage in her area. Stupid phones it is, I guess.

I am pretty sure both DTAC/Happy and AIS/One-2-Call have GSM/2G coverage in Sangkha district - it looks flat there smile.png , but no 3G coverage.

Maybe a neighbor has fixed-line internet and your wife can use WiFi there?

Thanks for your replies, I would like her to use someone's internet but it seems no one around her house has it (hmmm 2013 and No one has it......( be that a lesson to Farangs who hook up with Thai northern girls). I am not very happy about that situation to say the least. Anyway. thanks again :) phones it is. now if I can just get her to answer it when I call.
