Questions About Laptop Batteries

Is there a method to prolong my battery's life? (in terms of how many years it will last)

Will the battery be ruined if i charge it..and then dont use it for a while? (use AC power instead)

Or should i use it and charge it everyday (after the battery is depleted of course)...

thanks

The older battery technologies such as Nickel-Cadmium suffered from 'memory effect' and it was vital to discharge them fully on a regular basis to avoid losing capacity.

The newer batteries (Nickel-Metal Hydride or Lithium Ion) are much less prone to this problem.

My laptop gets run flat at least once a week just through me using it where power is not available. I suggest that you do the same, it certainly won't hurt the battery and will probably extend its useful life if only slightly.

There are many complicating factors, including temperature and charge/discharge rate, but the general practical advise is that modern lithium ion batteries should be kept at full charge on the charger whenever possible. Drawing them down and recharging wears them out. Drawing them all the way down wears them out faster. This is equally true for cell phones, cameras, music players and computers.

Keeping them fully charged also wears them out, but not too fast. :o The ideal treatment someone explained to me one time was to carefully discharge the battery to about 30%, disconnect it, and store it at a mild room temperature (cool season in BKK). It's shelf life in this state is maximized. Of course, this is totally impractical, and some devices do not even work on AC power without the battery installed.

People used to worry about overcharging, but modern chargers that are built into most devices do not do that.

a bit confused here....so i use the battery till it has about 30% left and then take it out and leave it somewhere.

So then i just recharge it later when i want to use it or what? It's not good to keep the battery when its fully charged?? (that sounds kinda weird with you saying that its better to leave at 30%)

explain please!

In case you don't already know, when your battery does finally give out, take it to Fortune City and there are specialist shops there that will 're-fill' the inards for you for a ridiculously small amount of money - way,.way less than buying a new battery. I 're-filled ' my Compaq notebook battery a year ago, and its still working fine.

(I say're-fill' coz I don't know exactly what it is they did: No doubt there's some expert here who can tell us :o )

i guess the word refill would be good enough! its simply just changing the inner part of the battery ..i think..
