Plumber / Handyman For Leaking Pipe In Ceiling

Good morning everyone.

An upstairs pipe or drain in our bathroom is leaking through the downstairs ceiling. The consensus around here seems to be that actual plumbers are difficult to come by, and the ones that are out there are typically tied up with building projects. The handyman that we usually use has tried to fix our problem already but was unsuccessful.

It seems like handymen are hit or miss with skills - i.e. great for one task, but inexperienced or incapable at another... So - I'm hoping to get a recommendation from someone who has hired a handyman to fix the problem we are having (or similar) and has gotten good results.

If you know of someone who has done this job before (or something that requires a similar amount of skill / competence) and could recommend them to me - it would be much appreciated.

Thank you!

Might not be a plumbing problem. Shower floors leaking are sometimes the problem. If you do not use the bathroom for 3-5 days and the leak continues, that would tell you that you probably have a water pipe leak. If it does not continue then the water pipe is okay and the problem is a drain or floor. You can further isolate the problem by stopping use of the toilet, sink, and shower one by one to determine which drain it is or if it is the shower floor.

You will save a lot if you can isolate the problem before starting to tear everything out to have a look.

IF you actually use the tub; check the over-flow...they are routinely not installed correctly. Otherwise could be the floor, as stated above. Seen it too many times in the States.

Funny thing about this sort of thing is that I've had two identical situations, one elsewhere in Asia, the other right here in CM. In both cases, water was dripping onto the ceiling from a leaky roof, with a steadily widening stain.

In the first instance, the guy sent to fix things got out a paint roller and painted over the spot. It re-appeared a few days later, so he painted it again.

Recently the roof leaked here, and I spoke to the landlord, and surprise, surprise, he sent his father around with a 2 litre pot of acrylic paint and a roller. He was about to depart when I pointed to the paint on the floor. He grabbed that morning's copy of my newspaper, and smeared it up.

I got out the mop and finished the job.

Now, we were talking about tradesmen weren't we......

Is there actually an apprentice system here for would-be electricians, plumbers etc??
