Weather warning for Phuket, Andaman as Patong's streets flooded
Phuket Gazette

PHUKET: -- The flood waters from last night’s deluge have cleared from Patong’s streets, but the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a weather warning for Phuket and the Andaman region forecasting more heavy rain until at least Friday.

A two-hour torrential downpour last night flooded major streets in Patong, including the party district of Soi Bangla, to depths of half a meter.

Kathu District Chief Weera Kerdsirimongkol this morning confirmed that all flood waters in Phuket’s premier tourist town had receded, in some places by as early as 5am today.

“The flooding started at about 9pm. It took about eight hours for all the excess water to drain and for Patong to return to normal,” Mr Weera told the Phuket Gazette.

In areas where storm drains were not coping with the volume of flood water, Patong Municipality workers used pumps, he added.

Staff at Patong Hospital confirmed that the resort town’s primary medical facility remained unaffected by the floods.

Other areas across the island also needed water to be pumped to clear roads, including the road from Wat Naka to Suan Luang (Rama IX, also known as King’s Park – map here) and in front of the Chaofa Thani housing estate on Chao Fa West Road in Chalong.

The TMD warning issued earlier today predicted heavy rain, as well as strong wind and waves due to the southwest monsoon prevailing over the Andaman Sea.

The foul weather is expected to continue until Friday, with increasing rain and isolated heavy falls expected along the southwest coast while the intense southwest monsoon remains. Ships at sea have been warned to proceed with caution, and small boats to stay ashore.

“Waves 2 to 3 meters high from strong winds are likely in the Andaman Sea,” said the warning.

Phuket, Ranong brace for potential landslide, flood
By English News

PHUKET, June 10 – Flooding in Phuket has receded after an overnight rain, and other southern provinces have been warned of heavy rain, potential landslides and further flooding.

Veera Kerdsirimongkol, Kathu district chief, said flooding in Patong has receded, and that the municipality cleaned roads which are now open to traffic as normal.

However, the Meteorological Department warned Monday of heavy rain in all regions, particularly in the Andaman Sea coastal areas.

Local authorities in Kathu district issued a warning for local residents to beware of potential flooding and landslide.

Mr Veera said several hours of rain often lead to flooding in Patong as sewers are unable to drain large amounts of water quickly. Moreover, the runoff from mountains flow to Patong as the mountainsides have been turned into rubber plantations or buildings. As a result, there is no catchment area on the mountains.

Chavalit Nitrarat, head of disaster prevention and mitigation office in Ranong said local officials have been placed on alert around the clock for heavy rain and strong wind from today through Thursday.

The southwest monsoon prevails over the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand together with the high pressure trough from China. Heavy rain and high waves is forecast in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, according to the latest weather update. (MCOT online news)

It's been unseasonably dry in Chiang Mai. I guess that is a good thing for flood-prone areas further south. We would enjoy a good long shower here.

Patong was absolutely awash in dirty, muddy water and after that had receded, the majority of the drains in a couple of major roads were completely full up with mud and silt.

Add to that the absolute fiasco with the mud and potholes which already exist on roadworks which should have been completed many months ago, and you have a perfect example of a holiday resort which has been spoiled by corruption, greed and inept planning.

There is absolutely no infrastructure in place to support the new building which is going on, and indeed the current infrastructure ceased to be adequate some six years ago...............I really do fear for the future of this place.
