Is there any reason that PVC piping is used instead of hoses?

For example if a distance of 30-40metres is to be 'plumbed' say from a well to a storage tank, is it worth all the work of making up PVC piping when a hose could be used? it it a lot more expensive for hoses?

Not only would a hose reduce additional leak paths it would be easier to install and change if required.

Am i missing something here?

Thanks.

I suspect that you are missing:

1) Price

2) Pipe will cope with compression-hose is vulnerable.

3)Lengths of PVC pipe are 'glued 'together. The joint is stronger than the pipe.

4) The industry uses PVC

If the pipe is small in diameter and has to be re located on a regular basis -then flexible pipe is the answer.

the hose will fall apart over time, the PVC pipe lasts forever

Also the hose will gunge up and start growing a lovely green algae.

For my garden irrigation I installed a backbone line of 1" PVC with T-joints about every 10m. The T-joint has a vertical riser with a valve and is threaded for joining a hose as needed. Buried in a slim trench about 20 cm down. Brances off after 20m to make a left connection to better cover the garden. Bonded joints, no leaks ever with a proper bonding (smear both the pipe and the connector). Took about one day with one helper.
