Dear all,

I have children with a Thai woman and we're both unmarried. I'd like to marry her so my children will get citizenship in my country in the EU. I've looked into the requirements and one is that I need to show yearly income. I'm now wondering if it would be acceptable to show my account with little to no income and very little savings? The no income is due to unemployment and I've lived off savings I've put in a Thai account.

Thanks in advance!

Why do you need to get married to do this? They are already your children and getting married won't change that. And who is asking about income? There is no requirement to have a certain income to get married, although when you complete an Affirmation of Freedom to Marry (for example - if UK) there is a section in that where you do state your occupation and income.

Thanks for your replies. According to my embassy's website, they require some sort of income or bank statement among other things to issue a certificate which I will need to proceed. As for why, after some research, marrying seems to be the easier way for my kids to get citizenship.

Your children or stepchildren?

If they are your biological children then they are of dual citizenship / nationality by birth.

If they are not your biological children, then a more involved process is guaranteed.

Different countries have different laws.

A biological child will not have your nationality, untill you have legally recognised the child or a judge has determined you are the father in a paternity suit.

Having legalised the child or being determned as the father can have different consequences, as can the age at which this is done. All depending on the law of the coutry inquestion.

The OP is confusing the requirements for visa and extension based on marriage, with getting married.

A few countries that I know of all you need to do is to first register the birth at your consulate. Sometimes the paperwork asks for a marriage license, however if you are not married and you name is not on the child's birth certificate, you might have problems and your consulate will tell you what you need to do.

Getting married in Thailand is relatively easy and can be done in just a few days. Typically you will need proof (affodavit) that you are not married already, translated to Thai, sealed with MOFA, then go to the local Amphur and get married. NOt too difficult.

But the letter from the embassy must include information about your income, per Thai government regulations.

The logic behind it I cannot guess (and it seems to me a violation of the Thai constitution regarding privacy) but it is a requirement.
