What has happened to Thailand's missing children?

Featured Replies

"The police know how many cars go missing each month, they know what type of car and what has been done with the stolen cars," he said scathingly.

"But for missing children they have no answer. They can't even tell us how many children are missing, how many have been rescued and what has happened to abducted children."

Okay, yes, same terrible things happen in all countries, but the police don't have a national missing persons database?

Sad story indeed. Do not really think that in thailand the government or its people, in general, places much value about children, apart of there one. Thinking about the acceptance by thais of flowerchildren in phuket, pattaya etc.

That database will come when the influentials are pressured enough. For some parents and kids unfortunately to late.

Keep faith.

I guess not? Makes sense, would cause TPTB to lose face!

My extended family upcountry in Surin periodically reports black vans roaming the province snatching young kids off the side of the road, during those times everyone accompanies them to school and picks them up end of the day, they take it very very seriously.

Then it dies down for a while, apparently they go off to work other provinces.

Word is they get taken over the border and sold off to who knows what evil-doers.

Never seen a word of any of this in the English-language media.

Remember life is cheaper here. . .

Dozens along Sukhumvit, but keep in mind these are foreign kids the police-mafia buy for this, along with the young women with young babies, apparently not really their own, swapped out bought and sold.

The ones I've gotten to know are from Cambodia, almost always ethnic Vietnamese from Phnom Penh. I've known one girl since she sold roses at eight, now maybe 20, helping the cops run the operation.

They'll also use Bangladeshi, used to operate the street stalls these days as well.

Really a shame Thailand allows its reputation to be damaged by exposing so many tourists to this stuff, everyone knows it's the cops running the scam.

Never give them cash, they don't get to keep it, just buy them some food. . .

Just asked the Thai with me, said they're currently working in Kanchanaburi, lots of kids, often right from in front of the village houses, police don't do anything and it doesn't make the news in Thai either, suppressed "for some reason".

She thinks they get sold for their organs to the Chinese, allowed to grow up a bit first until they're needed, sometimes just one kidney then put to work begging.

It's a living and not limited to Phuket and Pattaya.

I'd heard about the vans, snatch gangs and organ harvesting "urban legend" when I lived in the sticks.

Sad how anyone could see a person as a commodity, especially a child. It happens all the time though. There are 2300+ people that go missing in the US every day. Where do they go?

Thats why i wrote ETC. I have seen them as well in provincial towns. I was in sept 2005 in hua hin with my wife sitting in a bar, a 4 year old girl came to sell flowers. Bought her a coke and we were talking nice to her. Sweet innocent girl being exploited, a living as you mention is <deleted>, by drunk parents, she pointed them to us. 4 years later saw the same girl again. A friend pointed her to me and asked me to look at her eyes. Recognized her. EYES COLD AS ICE !!!!!!. Innocence gone. And you dare to call that a living ? EXPLOITATION !!!!!!!

The sad thing is that the thais think it is normal and the ignorant tourists laughing and buying their flowers. SAD !!!!!!!!!!!!!

The recent case of Nong Air (imprisoned and tortured by a wealthy couple who have gone into hiding) is a perfect example of what happens here and why it continues to happen.

The police and social authorities know exactly who the perpetrators are, they know exactly what they did.

But they are escaping justice.

Authorities to the couple - just wait for the international kerfuffle to die down, they'll forget about it then you can come back out into the open.

I did a search and can't find anything. Do you have a reference?

Thailand has the seediest underbelly. Sad story but thanks op.

Of course i was 1. But from day nr 1 arrived here i never understood why at 01.00 am tourists would buy laughingly a flower, chewing gum etc from a 4-12 year old kid. And not think any further about it. Holidayfeeling ??

Well what are they supposed to do? If you did actually try to "rescue" them, both you and they would be in physical danger from their very dangerous handlers who are free to act with complete impunity.

Not buy !

Of course, don't feed the elephants either (haven't been around a while!) but that doesn't help them much either does it.

I will pick up a yogurt at 7 or a noodle soup with extra veggies though and have a chat, find out who their handler is in the area, ask how they're treated etc.

Maybe one day someone braver than I will take the lead and I can help out, or at least spread the word. . .
