Hi guys,

a friend of mine (thai woman) married with an italian guy has got visa for italy.

She travelled from milan to switzerland by car to to visit a friend.

How long is it possible for her to stay in switzerland without applying for visa in switzerland?

Regards,
Khon Jon

Visit or settlement?

Both Italy and Switzerland are part of the Schengen Area, so the visa she got for Italy is also valid for Switzerland.

As long as she leaves the Schengen area when, or before, her Schengen visa expires then it doesn't matter which of the Schengen states she visits nor how long she stays in each.

Schengen visit visas are normally valid for 90 days.

Thank you for your quckly answer.

she can go to Germany or France or any Schengen state.

My wife got a year from Italy, but because of my work commitments, she did not go there but to Switzerland and Germany.

Believe that if the lady is entering Switzerland on a Schengen visit visa the maximum permitted stay would be 90 days .

For a stay beyond 90 days she would need to apply to the relevant Canton for an appropriate Swiss visa.

This means that she can move an unlimited time in Switzerland?

No, not unlimited, only for the validity and any time restrictions on the visa.

If she has a residency visa for Italy then I understand that she can stay in Switzerland, or any other Schengen country or combination of same, for up to 90 days at a time.

If she lives in Thailand, or anywhere else outside the Schengen area, and has a visit visa for the Schengen area, including Italy, then her total time in the Schengen area, including Italy, must not exceed the validity of her visa; which for visitors is usually 90 days.

So whether she lives in Italy or elsewhere is important.
