Doi Suthep - Saturday - What was it? 100s of college kids...

Went biking up Doi Suthep late this afternoon (Saturday) and saw 100s and 100s of college students in different groups of matching uniforms in what looked like troops, some carrying a group flag, some groups chanting and singing or playing a drum.

I saw signs along the way that had been put up but they were 100% in Thai so I cannot tell what the event was...

Does anyone know what it was?

They had the Annual March up Doi Suthep the other month.

I go through the uni each morning from Tanon Suthep to Huay Keaw each morning about 05.30 and yesterday was exceptional.

Undreds ! I would have thought Thousands, couldn't go straight through so had to divert and come out on Irrigation Canal Rd.

Staff in my Condo had no idea what was going on but as previous poster said they are always doing something.

Strangely Uni started late this year and I do not remember seeing Graduation this year.

.... I took a ride up there early eve and they were on their way down. Absolutely disgusting mess of rubbish littered in their wake. Some workers were cleaning up thestreets after them. .. but why not teach them to be responsible? !! Teaching instead to believe there is always someone around to clean up their shit. Im sick of witnessing disregard for littering. Even if a bin nearby, the ground is easier...!

Agreed. I was going to mention in my original post, but I didn't want the topic to stray. :) It was really awful, trash was thrown everywhere, and the smallest amounts of trash were in the litter bins put up by the Oishi tea vendor. Most of it was just thrown into the side of the road and into the forest. Sad.

At first the attitudes about trash were puzzling to me but I have come to accept them and even benefit from it.

Why carry some trash until I find a proper place to leave it? Just find the nearest trash heap or impromptu land fill and jettison it.

I remember some years ago when I first visited I was thinking where the heck are the trash cans? A lot of locals don't have much need for them.

The cans have to be emptied and that's work that could be avoided.

Im sorry to take it off topic, but i feel this is really important.

This should be basic education imo..CMU should have them up there cleaning as part of "bonding" for the students. NOT bonding over how irresponsible they can be.

This morning!! (AFTER a major cleaning up) This is STILL what remains..

EVERYWHERE!! The entire length of the base of the temple road, to the temple itself.

They should be ashamed.

Does anyone know where the actual students came from. Is it the whole of CMU (if it is CMU) or certain depts etc. Or another college?

That's absolutely disgusting, the pictures should be forwarded to whoever organised the event and the institution.

Useless to bitch about it on here, they should be made to get off their lazy butts and go clean it up. If it was my kids responsible they would be spending the rest of their weekend clearing up.

It's a yearly thing; every faculty (engineering, medicine, etc) goes in a group together. Supposedly the Engineering students have to run where as the others have to walk. Been going on for ages (my gf attended CMU about 10 years ago and it was a long held tradition then).

I don't think reporting the litter will achieve anything, it will just be seen as another farang not understanding thai culture!
