stoneyboy
I fine Vientiane to be walker friendly, most major Thai towns or cities simply don't cater for walkers,no pavements or open green spaces in sight.

el jefe
New York everyone walks. great diversity of food when you get tired of walking, there is excellent public transportation. I live in Chiang Mai. it wouldn't make my top 100 list.

uptheos
"so far, my favourite 3 are penang, hanoi (around the lake), and chiang mai. any other suggestions?" You never mentioned that you haven't been out of SEAsia. That being the case, you wouldn't really know what a walker friendly city is, especially if you include Chiang Mai, which is a permanent obstacle course and a nightmare for anyone with a disability!
