Things to do and see in Singapore with my TGF.

Hi everyone,

I'm here in Singapore for work, been here before but for work again so don't know any places except for famous 4 floors (went there drinking with buddies), my GF wouldn't be interested in visiting that place so I'm lost.

Any advises on where to go and what to do, and approximate costs of different activities?

If you're referring it to the famous four floors.. You haven't been for a long time :P

It's been five floors for a few years now...

How long are you taking her for?

What are her usual interests?

First trip abroad or seasoned traveler?

Where are you staying?

I've been there for a few weeks this time and went to OT once, didn't really count the floors but it's the same as it was last time I was here - 2 years back.

She's here for a week and it's not her 1st time overseas (been to Canada, US and many Asian countries) but the 1st time in S-pore.

We are staying near Senosa (sp??) island. Her interests are like many girls - shopping, taking pics (a lot of them) of herself near all the famous landmarks, shopping, dining, shopping. Did I say shopping? :D

Is she flying in alone? Make sure she has a return ticket, evidence of where she is staying, money, and doesn't dress like she's headed straight for OT.

She's already here, and yes she had to buy a return ticket upon leaving BKK.

And thx Craig, I know how to google but nothing can beat the interaction with people who has been here and done this and that. I have a few places in my head, like Marina bay hotel and that big fairy wheel and Sanosa island, but that's about it, don't know where else to go for good nights out with views, a little bit of shopping and dining. :)

Yeah it's been 5 floors for more than 2 years :P

Sentosa (sic) is a quaint little island for the most part. A trip to Universal Studios should be part of your itinerary - if she's a shutterbug - Ku De Ta at Marina Bay has great views. Sentosa on Sundays is quite the local thing to do Tanjong Beach Club is the place to be or the W Hotel. It's like a Sunday session on the beach. Have wasted many a Sunday there in the past.

Shopping's a bit overrated in Singapore, yes there's a lot of it and a number of brands not available in Thailand but price wise fairly comparable.

I like Clarke Quay for dining, as well as Boat Quay for cheaper drinking and dining.

Sorry for the cheeky response. wai2.gif

I know getting input from members is great, but your question is very broad. But seriously, before I post a question like this, I do some research first. Lots of great info available out there. Maybe buy a travel guide. LP had them on sale for 50%. So you could get the Singapore guide book, PDF version, for something like $9. Great value and lists a ton of stuff.

That can help narrow down what you'd like to do????

Again, sorry!!!

Is the passport needed for nationality verification? I heard that locals have to pay to get in but foreigners get in for free.

Universal studios will be fun for both of you .... my guess is that she's never been on a serious big dipper ride - but get the Fast Pass ticket to jump the queues.

Transformers ride and the Cylon roller coaster are a must. If she can't be persuaded on to the more obvious roller coaster rides - go for The Mummy and tell her it's a scenic ride ;-)

The walk along the harbor from the Marina Bay Sands shopping Mall to the new Botanic Gardens Park is nice.

And she'll need a photo with the Merlion in the background - go to the small park next to the Merlion by the Marina just before 21:30 as you'll get a great view of the (free) Marina Bay Sands light and laser show.

Marina Square shopping Mall is good for bargains and not so pricey as the Orchard Road department stores.

The Long Bar at Raffles for a Singapore Sling (the drink was 'invented' in this bar) and some pea-nuts is a must.

Singapore Flyer is good for views and photos .... but gets a bit boring by the mid point.

Thai food in Singapore will not pass muster so encourage her to try other types of food.

Take a brolly .... it will rain every day!

We are back already and she's satisfied, except for the raining part, we didn't get under any real heavy downpour but still, pictures would have been nicer with clear blue sky as well.

We went to Marina bay hotel rooftop with the excursion to the gardens and infinity pool, Casino, Singapore foyer, Merlion, one day of window shopping at Orchard Rd (she decided no to buy anything there as everything was expensive. She ended up going a bit of shopping at VIVO City shopping center, just because we stayed at Bay Hotel, which is right next to it (near Sentosa island), and a few days of shopping and dining at Chinatown.

After looking at Sentosa brochure, she decided to skip it, and regarding casino at the Marina Bay Hotel, yes the Passport (or another form of ID) is required to enter and it's free for foreigners, dress code isn't enforced even thought the rules are posted at the entrance, I ended up going in wearing jeans for a day and was cursing damn things as it was too hot wearing them, there were plenty of people inside wearing shorts and sandals... She lost about $20 SGD before getting a $128 SGD win on a slot machine (I think that's what it called) after which she cash out and left with a smile. :)

All in all it was a good trip for her, I just know she wouldn't have come if we had to pay the hotel ourselves, but as I was on a business trip down there and my company was paying for my stay, it was worth it for her to come.

By the way folks, when planing a trip there, read a bit about the MRT, it's real cheap and there're stations in pretty much all touristy places in Singapore. Just for comparison, an afternoon taxi out of airport to my hotel was over $30 SGD and the MRT from the Airport to VIVO City (right next to my hotel) was only $2.30 SGD thumbsup.gif

I pushed a 400 ton, 6.6 metre diameter Tunnel Boring machine, 200 metres through the basement of Vivo City in 2008.

The shoppers looked shocked to see something that resembled a cave man emerge at lunch time wink.png

Go to the Crazy Elephant Bar on Clark Quay, for really good live music. There are also many seafood restaurants along there to get something to eat. Music starts at about 8 P.M. (I think). You can do a google search of "crazy elephant youtube" and get an idea of the type of music (blues/rock).

Plenty of shopping.

Crazy Elephant was the place I used to drink, back when you cvould write on the wall. Perhaps you still can, but I do know it expanded a lot since the good old days when Clarke Quay was cheaper than Boat Quay and M'hmd Sultan road was the "in" place to be (late 90s).

Now days Harry's at Harbour Front is the only place I will drink and a taxi between Harbour Front and Changi is the only places I will travel.

Singapore is only for some, not for others and I can be included in the 'others'.

The Goldern Mile used to do authentic Thai perhaps still does.

Why go to the trouble of wasting a couple of pints by going to Harbor Front when you've got 2 Harry's Bars at the airport :P

Used to love Harry's at T1... Sitting outdoors with a decent pint of Harry's lager listening to and watching aircraft arrive/depart..

T3 is too sterile for me and if transiting in T3 I'd schlep it at the Tiger Bar and just take my pint outside to have a dart, just remember to bring the glass inside ;)
