Hi there

My Thai girlfriend recently got ILR status as unmarried partner to me, a British citizen. The process took 8 weeks. Many thanks 7by7 for your help along the way.

We fall under the old rules and am aware that applying for citizenship after Oct 13 will require my partner to obtain B1 speaking and listening in addition to her life in UK test certificate obtained already.

What is the quickest way to get this qualification? Do you have to go to college/enrol on a course for so many hours/weeks learning? I have also heard that you can self study and then pay to sit the exam as an external candidate at an accreditated exam centre.

Any advice or experiences are welcome, thanks

She will need to take an exam from an approved provider; see this list.

Note that she only needs to pass speaking and listening as the LitUK test is proof of her reading and writing ability.

The list gives contact details for each provider, so I suggest you contact some of them to find out where she can take the exam and, if necessary, where she can study for it first.

Alternatively, if you and she feel it's necessary, ask about suitable courses at your local further education college(s).

Trinity College do a B1 speaking and listening test for ILR and have test centres in London Birmingham & Manchester. I'm booking the Manchester test for my Mrs. It's £110 for a tem minute chat which is split into two parts. Apparently the applicant has to select a subject from list of options to talk about for the first part. Second part is a subject chosen by the examiner.
