King visits the statue of the royal grandfather

BANGKOK, 16 July 2013 (NNT) - His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej left his hospital ward on the Chalerm Phrakiat Building in Siriraj hospital late Monday afternoon to pay homage to the Statue of King Chulalongkorn holding 18-month-old Prince Siriraj Kakuttaphan, situated in a pavilion in front of the hospital.

Upon his arrival at the pavilion, His Majesty the King offered a garland to the statue which was built in 2011 by Siriraj Hospital. The statue was designed and moulded by the Office of Chang Sib Mu (artisans of ten crafts), at the instruction of His Majesty the King. It is 1.25 times life size, depicting King Rama V sitting on a chair with little prince Siriraj Kakuttaphan on his lap, showing the affection between father and son. The little prince had died from dysentery a year before the opening of Siriraj hospital in 1888.

The statue was built in commemoration of King Rama V's contributions to the better welfare of Thai people, as well as his establishment of Siriraj Hospital, which has been named after the little prince.

His Majesty King Bhumibol also visited the Siriraj Bimuksthan Museum located nearby. The museum has been developed from an old train compartment and is currently used to demonstrate the Thai history, the old lifestyle of people in the ‘Bangkok Noi’ community, and the development of tradional Thai medicine. The museum has been unofficially opened to the public since March this year.

BANGKOK: -- Former British prime minister Tony Blair still turns on the charm, even though he doesn't hold any political position. One day, when he was supposed to show up as a panellist on the World Economic Forum on East Asia 2013 in Myanmar, he was late. Yet, nobody seemed to care. In the session themed "Chasing the Next Big Ideas", panellists wanted to hear from him how politicians can help big ideas from individuals and corporations materialise.

SATUN: -- Two members of Satun's Sakai ethnic minority have died of typhoid and three others have been in a worrying condition, according to the southern province's deputy governor Utarn Pichyaporn.

He said on Monday that some 50 other members of the minority group living in Satun's Thung Wa district have been asked not to move to another place. This was aimed at preventing possible spread of the disease to other areas.

Sakai normally move from place to place, he said, adding that as the cause of the outbreak remained unknown, they were asked not to move elsewhere. "There is a need for confinement, with their consent. Officials need to do screening to determine the pathogen," Utarn said, adding that the Sakai people have given shots to protect them against typhoid.

The deputy governor said local officials have been instructed to provide urgent assistance to the Sakai community following the deaths and illness caused by typhoid.

Typhoid is serious infection marked by intestinal inflammation and ulceration. It is caused by Salmonella typhosa ingested with food or water.
