Your new one will be for five years but don't go until one day after your current one expires or they will tell you to go away until it expires. Sounds nuts but TIT.

OP; why do you need an international license? Your Thai license is good for use in many other countries, i've had mine accepted in Australia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, South Africa and China.

You go to the transport department on the Hang Dong road, tell the lady at the Information desk that you want to make an international driving permit, then she'll give you a form, tell you what to copy (bring your passport), bring pictures and then they'll do one for you.

While the Thai license may get accepted, I think it's much better/safer to get one that anyone can read, be it a car rental place or a police officer in case s$#t happens.

Don't think that's the case anymore, when I went I had to renew my bike 1 month before my car so when I went to renew my bike they let me renew the car also even though I still had a month left to expire

Last month I went a week earlier to renew both of my 1 year licenses to 5 years. They processed both licenses and the friendly rep remained me to continue to use the old licenses until they expire.

Oops, I didn't see the previous post with a similar experience.

I am heading for the states and am considering getting one to play it safe.

I am definitely planning to rent cars while I am in the states.

I thought the main and only purpose for getting one is so that it can be read in the native language.

Since the Thai license is both in Thai and English, why would you still need one in the US? I wouldn't mind saving the 500B they charge if I really didn't need it.

You can apply an international drivers licencse if you already have a Thai licencse, the process could be completed within one day and they will issue you a white multipage booklet written in english with a list of countries where you can use it (that was what they issued me in bkk), though the validity will be only one year.

My 2 cents:

1) Yes, the first Thai drivers license is for 1 year. Renewal is for 5 years -- I've just done that and it's remarkable how fast the DMV is here as opposed to California!

2) I am ignorant as to the Thai international license. Is the expiration date fixed at one year or more, or if a lesser time, maxes out when your visa expires or Thai driver's license expires?

I would be curious to know as well for this year I'll be applying for an Int'l DL since my USA Int'l and California DL both expired. And it's good to know that it's in English as well as Thai (country of issuance), which I believe is the int'l standard.
