Sooner or later this guy will get into trouble and get sent to prison in Sweden. You don't change from the kind of person who would stab another to death in a bar fight over a dog to a law-abiding citizen.

I sincerely hope the NZ authorities are applying as much diplomatic pressure as possible against Sweden to get this man brought to justice. If they leave it to the Thai authorities it's unlikely anything will happen in a hurry.

The fact that a fellow Kiwi was killed in a foreign country should be irrelevant to the NZ Government - they should be acting on behalf the deceased NZ Citizen and his family and affording every conceivable assistance in bringing the fugitive to justice.

But knowing the wishy washy, namby pamby, socialist doo gooder, tree hugging, politically correct, "we need to get elected next year so just keep the seat warm, don't want to upset the Swedes 'cause it might hurt the lamb and cheese exports", kind of government that we have......this ain't going to happen any time soon.

Sometimes I wish we had a government like Israel or the US - send a couple of the SAS over there to bring him back to Thailand or NZ for justice, or dish it out summarily on the spot.

The SAS are a unit of the British army. They are not for hire. The last phrase in your post persuades me that you do not know this.

Sorry but NZ has its own SAS as they are not exclusively British i.e.The New Zealand Special Air Service, abbreviated as the NZSAS, was formed on 7 July 1955 and is the special forces unit of the New Zealand Army, closely modelled on the British Special Air Service (SAS). It traces its origins to the Second World War and the famous Long Range Desert Group that a number of New Zealanders served with.

Swedish arrest over Kiwi's Thai death

Friday 08 Aug 2014

Channel 3 News / New Zealand

A man who allegedly killed a New Zealand man in a fight at a bar in Thailand has been arrested in Sweden. Robert Hollick, 43, died in August 2012 after he was stabbed three times in the neck and back at a bar in the coastal resort city of Pattaya.

Following the attack, Thai police arrested Swedish man Andreas Ringvall and charged him with Mr Hollick's murder. Two months later, Ringvall was allowed to leave Thailand after reportedly paying close to $20,000 in bail.

For Fair Use.

It is now two yas since my friend was murdered by this piece of scum. Nothing has happened and, unfortunately, nothing will. He got away with it. This is Thailand. Be careful whose path you cross.

RIP Rob

Oh... he was your friend. I have a idea how it feels. I had also a friend he got stabbed by another westerner to death in Pattaya. The killer ended up in jail where he died two years later. At least, a kind of fair punishment.

Hi Sigurris, I'm following the story of your friends murder too. So the killer has been arrested in Sweeden and will face a trial in Sweeden. What took them 2 years to arrest this man? Do they actually arrest their own citizens for a murder commited in another country against a person of a different national? If this is the case then lets hope the Sweedish Government gets this b@stard once and for all.

As for the Thai Police, shame shame shame to the Police Officer that "mysteriously" let him go, we all know why you did it. And what about the Thai Police Officer that was assigned to investigate the case of why the police Officer let him go? We never get follow ups on these kind of matters do we?

Yes Sigurris, RIP for your friend Rob.

I know nothing of the Swedish Police arresting him. Nothing about it on the internet. As far as I know he is living free.

update on the Hollick killing today

1:27 PM Sunday Mar 22, 2015

A Swedish man has been sentenced to one and a half years' in prison following the death of a Kiwi man at a pub brawl in Thailand in 2012.

The 42-year-old man from Gotland was sentenced to one year and six months in prison for aggravated assault and manslaughter, at the Nacka District Court on Friday, Swedish media reported.

It was reported that he was unable to be charged with murder due to flaws in the investigation.

The conviction comes after an altercation involving the man and New Zealander Robert Hollick, 43, at a bar in Pattaya, Thailand, on August 21, 2012,

Swedish media reported that the pair initially argued about a dog, before becoming involved in an altercation a few hours later.

In the fight, Mr Hollick suffered from stab wounds to the neck, and later died.

The Nacka District Court was critical of the initial investigation into Mr Hollick's death, Swedish media reported.

The court said it believed the investigation was incomplete, inaccurate and unclear, as Thai police did not carry out any detailed crime scene investigation and did not hold any formal hearings.

A knife, which was suspected to have been the murder weapon, also disappeared.

Due to these "flaws" in the investigation, the Nacka District Court was unable to charge the man with murder.

The Nacka District Court also ordered the man to pay $30,000 SEK ($4597 NZD) in damages to the Mr Hollick's family.

I thought I read an article just today that said he got 18 months. Something about the crime scene was so badly handled that's all the time they could give him. I think even the knife went missing during a renovation of a police station.

Happy to be corrected if that's wrong..

Given that it's spelt out in the repasting of the news item 3 posts above yours, I dont think its wrong. 18 months for cold blooded murder - insane. You get more than that for ATM fraud.

It took a long time, but here we have it, a murder conviction, and a corrupt Thai judge under arrest

Kiwi's killer has manslaughter conviction overturned, changed to murder

Last updated 05:00, December 20 2015

More than three years after bribing his way out of a Thai police cell, the killer of a New Zealand man has finally been found guilty of murder.

Robert Hollick, 43, was stabbed to death at a bar in tourist hot spot Pattaya in 2012.

After the frenzied attack, which was sparked by an argument about Hollick's dog, Thai police arrested and charged Swede Andreas Ringvall with his murder.

But Ringvall left the country two months later in unusual circumstances, after paying 500,000 baht, more than $20,000, in bail.

Investigations revealed Ringvall had changed his name to Andreas Karlsson and started a new life in the small town of Nynashamn, Sweden, where he was working as a labourer.

Following a request by Thai authorities, Stockholm police arrested Ringvall in July last year and charged him with murder.

At the trial, flaws in the Thai police's investigation and a lack of witnesses resulted in the court convicting Ringvall of manslaughter instead and sentenced him to 18 months' jail. He was released soon after.

Now, the Swedish national has been sentenced to 10 years' jail after the Court of Appeal in his home country overturned the earlier decision.

Swedish police have also revealed that the Thai judge believed to have accepted a bribe from Ringvall has been arrested on corruption charges.

STORY SO FAR

August 21, 2012: Robert Hollick is stabbed three times in the neck and dies after a bar fight in Pattaya. Swedish man Andreas Ringvall is arrested and charged with murder. His girlfriend is also detained but later released.

August 24: Ringvall is granted bail after paying 500,000 baht (more than $20,000 at the time) and given his passport, but the immigration service is told not to let him leave the country.

August 27: Documents released under the Official Information Act show an unknown person calls the New Zealand embassy in Bangkok and says he has heard Ringvall will try to abscond while on bail. The embassy tells the person to contact police and makes its own inquiries, but has little success.

October 28: Ringvall is granted permission by the Pattaya court to leave Thailand for two weeks. He flies to Sweden and fails to return.

November 19: The New Zealand embassy formally asks the courts for information, but finds out little.

December 14: A warrant is issued in Thailand for Ringvall's arrest, and his bail guarantor is fined.

Late December: Hollick's mother, Anne, hears from a friend of her son that Ringvall has fled Thailand.

January 2013: The Thai ambassador to New Zealand writes to reassure Anne Hollick he will look into the matter.

June: After repeated inquiries to Thai and Swedish authorities, Thai Interpol decides to request the extradition of Ringvall from Sweden, or that he be tried for murder in his homeland.

July 2013: It is revealed Ringvall has changed his name and is living in a small fishing village, working as a labourer.

July 2014: Swedish police arrest Ringvall and charge him with murder.

March 2015: After problems with the evidence and witnesses, Hollick is found not guilty of murder and sentenced to 18 months' jail for manslaughter.

December 2015: The Swedish Court of Appeal overturns the verdict and finds Ringvall guilty of murder.
