Rimping Promenada Report

Went there about a week ago. Absolutely hated the place and would not be surprised if it goes bust in less than 2 years. What a waste of space to house a bunch of snack bars and way too many coffee shops. Terrible food court as has been said. I did not check out the cinema. That may be the strong point. Next time I'll check it out - if there is a next time.

BUT, I loved Rimping. What a great selection of unusual (for Thailand or at least C.M.) products all done first-class. Have to agree with the others about the lighting. Seems quite strange.... Yes, turn on the lights.

Parking - horrendous and chaotic. Saw a minor argument erupt when 2 people were fighting over a parking spot.

I give it a FAIL. Wish it was not such a hassle because it would be worth going to just for Rimping. But nothing is worth that much trouble.

So . . . does anybody know if Rimping sells real greek yogurt? Chobani or some other kind of authentic greek?

Real Greek Yoghurt you will find in Big-C.

Big-C Sells a lot of great Imported or "foreigners' products as it is actually owned by (or part of) the French "Casino-Group" for far better prices than......

That's great news, thank you very much. I'll have to make my way up there then. Much appreciated.thumbsup.gif

Yes we were there a week ago and for grocery shopping they did have some innovative ideas for Thailand at least. But it seems to me with the lighting that they were more concerned with ambiance than selling groceries. There were spots that it was hard to read the price tag because of the lack of light.

I will have to go back when I have a little more time and see if they have a lay out similar to what I was used to back home. Like all the condiments in one area. It was really a pleasant surprise to see that they had a sign on top of the foods in the area below it like Pasta and all kinds of different pastas there. Will have to check out the sandwich bar to see if it is reasonably priced. As for the rest of the mall well it is definatly still under construction.

I was excited when I first heard about it that they were going to have movie theaters there. Turns out no big deal they show the same shows as the Airport Mall. Will have to go to one to check on the seats. Back home they had lots of theaters and often the same movie at more than one. I would judge them by the seats. The ones at Airport are all OK for me. Occasionally the wife and I will treat are selves to the luxury Lazy Boy type seats in Theater 7. I saw an example of the high price ones at the Promenada and was not impressed with them. They were very similar to some the Airport Mall had for a while tried them once and said no way. They eventually changed back to the Lazy Boy style.

I was not driving so I was just left at the door while the driver looked fo0r a parking space. It took him a while. I don't know if they have plans for more parking or not. I know one area for parking is quite a walk to get to the Mall it's self. I didn't notice any public transportation there such as at the Airport or KSG. They do how ever have free shuttle buses for four different routes in the city.

Since many people complain about the parking situation at Promenada, I have heared that the newly build Maya mall gets 4000 parking spots compared to the 2500 at Promenada!

Now lets wait and see if it's possible to get in and out Maya if they open.

10/10. Best supermarket in CM. Only problem is getting the trolley to the car. If there was a lift i couldn't find it.

As you leave Rimping, keep working your way around to the right. There is an elevator that will let you out on the ground floor near the uncovered parking area.

The Huay Kaew - Nimmenhemin intersection has the worst traffic jams in all of Chiang Mai. Just add shopping mall traffic in and out and you have a recipe for disaster.

Promenada has been much better thought out. It will be the winner in the long run.

If I was into betting I would probably put my money on the new Central mall although I have no inside knowledge of the parking plan there. I think the Promenada may fail over the long term.

As the outer suburbs grow and the middle classes are growing rapidly I can see Promenada doing quite well due to its location and nice layout, something different other than the concrete monstrosities that are the norm here. The massive indoor kids playground, impressive cinemas, The new Dukes restaurant , Toys R Us, Ice skating rink all look good for it's future. Central will just be more of the same, the old tired format. Anyway, i think they will both do well. Not so sure about the maya mall though...Time will tell.

Well I am anxious to see the mall when it is done probably some time next month.

I do have a problem with the location. Seems to me they should have twice the amount of parking for a rural area. Also they should have public transport available besides the shuttles. Unless it is OK to take the shopping carts home with you to get the products you have purchased from the shuttle to your home a quarter of a mile away.

The number of folks going to a shopping mall by public transport would be minimal. The odd backpacker on a budget perhaps. The Thai's drive or hop in the back of the pickup. This won't be an issue for Promenada.

I agree it will take some time for promenada to be successful. Central is a sure bet for success from day 1. They have a tried a proven formula. Yes its a booring cement prison like buildings, but that works.

Promenada needs more big name fashion and cosmetic brands to bring the shoppers in. Also needs more restaurants to keep people from leaving at 6pm.

Looks like Kad Suan Kaew Mall is feeling competition for hi-so clients and has done something to attract that crowd as seen here by the cars I saw parked there this afternoon. Also saw a red Rolls Royce driving by the train station, is there something going on?

The other JC (Jeremy Clarkson) & the Top Gear crew are in town to make a feature on Thai driving?

Thais are getting richer and richer. The demand for high-end automobiles is increasing.

All those wonderful things for families at Promenada to look forward to - but so far... no Dairy Queen. Too downmarket for the likes of Promenada perhaps? I don't want high end frozen organic yoghurt after a tedious day of shopping.

Hoping for a Baskin and Robbins.

I did hear DQ will have a presence there. Early days yet.
