Thai TV ownership close to saturation

BANGKOK: -- International ratings company Nielsen forecasts that up to 22.6 million households in Thailand will have a TV set this year or 99.6 per cent of the 22.688 million households, up from a 92.8 per cent rate in 2008.

The data show that growing awareness of the value of information and news content are key factors in the significant increase in TV ownership in Thailand.

The percentage of Thai households with TV in and around Bangkok is close to 100 per cent.

Interestingly, Nielsen said TV ownership in rural areas looks set to exceed 99 per cent of households this year, up from 94.7 per cent in 2008.

Consumers are viewing more content on computers, smartphones and tablets, but TV remains the dominant platform.

Sinthu Peatrarut, Nielsen Thailand’s managing director for media client leadership, said a company survey found Thais spend 3.49 hours a day watching TV, up from three hours in 2011. Soap operas are the most popular content, followed by entertainment, news and mini-series.

Mr Sinthu said TV remains the most effective advertising tool for mass audiences.

Jakkrit Keeratichokchaikun, senior vice-president and chief merchandising officer at Power Mall, said sales of TV sets in Thailand declined by 20 per cent year-on-year to B4 billion in the first five months of this year. Consumers delayed purchases to wait for a clear resolution by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) on digital TV.

The Kasikorn Research Center (K-Research) predicts the sales value of TV sets will grow by 6.4 per cent to 10.7 per cent to B37-38 billion this year.

TV sales could reach 2.8 to 3.1 million units for the full year, as the NBTC is on the verge of switching the country’s analogue broadcasting system to digital technology.

K-Research predicts the average Thai household will have two or three sets in the near future compared with one per household in rural areas and two or three in Greater Bangkok.

On Thai tv very few down to earth programs about the world and it's peoples-geography=to have people aware where they are and their own countries situations.

Opposition to government decisions too little too late, the fear of repercussions for speaking out too strong, the rubbish soaps that are on the air with their products advertisements frequent. Way far too many persons on the box in disguise as presenters-newscasters- very little on the spot reporting at sites around the country, getting the police and photo's of the incident only--AND video repeated. Years ago there used to be a t.v channel that made a mockery of local town officials and the lack of attention to roads etc. News seems to be restricted/censured --Newspapers printing government wrongs are then told to wrap up and not to follow up on the article --WE posters find this here after we answer topics and wish to learn the outcome----nearly nothing is followed up--BUT it's quickly spewed from the Nation and then left to die.

I assume you're speaking of BBC Entertainment and much of what's endlessly repeated day after day was first shown as much as 38 years ago (Fawlty Towers) or 30 years ago ('Allo 'Allo) or 20 years ago (Absolutely Fabulous). Some episodes of less ancient shows such as Lead Balloon are repeated week after week.

I would guess that something newer has been produced in UK, aside from Graham Norton, but by the time it reaches BBC Entertainment Kate & Willie's son will be an old man.

I would guess that something newer has been produced in UK, aside from Graham Norton, but by the time it reaches BBC Entertainment Kate & Willie's son will be an old man.

WETV (Worst Ever Television) throws up repeat after repeat on the cable service and frequently, goes "OFF THE AIR." Has anybody got better suggestions for shows in English Language?

When i first visited the U.S in 1970 i couldn't believe the amount of channel's they had, the adverts every five minutes and the amount of trash a lot of the channel's showed. Six years later i went to Japan for the first time and found they had modeled their TV on the U.S......but the adverts were a lot funnier. Fast forward 30 odd years and first arrived in the land of trash where TV is completely unwatchable. All this reminds me of what my Father thought of TV back in the 50's when we Brit's first started getting 14'' screens in black&white. After watching for a month or so he used to say ''That one eyed monster in the corner will stunt the minds of anyone who watches it for long and will spread evil around the Planet, so if you want to learn anything useful dump it and read a lot more''. Perhaps Thai parents would like to offer their children some similar sound advice. LOL.
