VPN Service, recommendations?experience?

If I am not mistaken, the Thor network is geared to tunnel through proxies, erected to prevent someone to reach a banned site, and applies only to the browser, while VPN encrypts the whole traffic browser or streamer (BBC iPlayer).

I used the Thor network back in Dubai, where people are kept within a safe fence from ever seeing tits or posteriors, sites for which I had a perpetual craving :)

Still do, to come to think of it!

I plan to subscribe to a VPN service.

I am after watching BBC iPlayer in Thailand and look up naughty sites when i go back home.

Has anyone had experience with this?

I use Vyprvpn (google for url). IPs in many countries.

10 USD/mo. If you're not a premium subscriber on a certain service. Backed or operated by a very large usenet provider.

UK, London works with iplayer.

The US and Danish clusters I use for Netflix.

Malaysia or Singapore to avoid stingy Thai ISPs when doing international dls.

ibVPN has worked great for me. I used it mostly for spotify and pandora but it worked fine for hulu as well. I have only tried their US servers.

I think it is about $5 a month. Cheaper if you buy for longer.

.....but has anyone used the TOR browser in Thailand? I ask this because it may serve your purpose.

TOR works fine for it's intended purpose in Thailand, HOWEVER you need to be aware that the exit nodes located in most/all (?) European countries that I have experimented with have the exit node's IP address registered as a proxy service.

So if you think you can "pretend" that you are physically resident in Spain just because you appear to have a Domestic Spanish IP address via the TOR network you are mistaken, you will be identified as using a proxy service whose exit node just happens to be in Spain, two different things.

Likewise with many VPNs there will be the issue of your connection being shared with many other users of the same service. The typical desire for many Europeans in Thailand is to play El Gordo and Euro Lotto. When the Lotto access server accepts your login request they instantly know your IP address and user ID.

If they log 15 different login names seeming to come from the same IP address it doesn't take a genius to filter out local ISP connections from a VPN exit node and so flag all user accounts that have logged in from that IP address as suspected of being outside the country and therefore any winning ticket being void under the "resident at time of purchase" rule.

Using a point to point VPN to a known domestic user's PC in your target country is the only sure way to bypass this little niggle.

Agree with Cuban. I rent rackspace at a couple of locations, and run them as dedicated VPN endpoints. Cheaper than using a VPN service provider, you get dedicated IP addresses, use any choice of port ID, and OpenVPN is the software behind most of the commercial offerings and comes free. Absolutely rock solid and fool-proof, as far as I can tell.

You should definitely check out http://www.hidemynet.com . They offer many services when you signup. I've been using them for years and never had one single problem whatsoever. Normally the price is $49.99 yearly for service; however, they just sent me a 50% off coupon and it locks your account in at the discounted rate. So you can keep this rate forever at $24.99/yearly. Code here: 50OFF2013 Pretty sweet deal. wink.png

Edit: Just want to add that I use OpenVPN on their service. I haven't tried any of the other VPN types that they offer.

I highly recommend strongvpn. I have been using them for 2 years and have not had a single issue. Fast, reliable, and the ability to have your home country IP anywhere.

http://strongvpn.com/strong_vpn_accounts_usa_new.php?gclid=CKve0NCv0rgCFUuk4AodR0wAmw

I bought a preloaded router from strongvpn so I wouldn't have to frustrate myself configuring my own. Yes it was more expensive, but like I said, I have never had a single issue in two years of use, and if I did, they have 24 hr support where you can allow them to come in and take over your machine and fix it remotely. It is much cheaper if you want to flash your own router, however, this little quote from the site made up my mind for me:

Warning - Flashing your router may BRICK your router

Flashing and replacing the factory firmware with OpenSource firmware can cause your router to be ruined and non functional, aka "bricked". If you are going to flash your router with dd-wrt or tomato we advise you to be very careful and be aware of the firmware and version of router you have. Follow the instructions carefuly from the Opensource websites http://www.dd-wrt.com, http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato.
We provide all the information on our website with no implied warranty or promise. You flash your router at your own risk.

So, I bought the router and paid for the VPN right through strongvpn with no bullshit or complications. I am computer literate, but I also know that a computer lets you make more mistakes faster than any invention in human history (with the possible exceptions of handguns and tequila). Do yourself a favor, buy a preloaded router and a VPN account from the same company. There will be those who disagree, but then there are always those folks to contend with here. Gloom, doom, and better ideas abound on this forum. You asked for my experience and recommendation, I have given you both.

Good Luck !!

If you are looking for a fast, cheap, and secure VPN service try our newly introduced service. Of course it doesn't show up in any top list because it's just a 2-month-old baby! But you can give it a try! We offer a free trial account too :-)

Strong VPN.

The support and service is excellent, have used them for 3 years. Not expensive.

You get what you pay for.

I have used HideMyIP and Black VPN, both are not in the same league as Strong VPN.

I hope you find what you are looking for.

I have used Witopia VPN for years and have nothing but good words for them. I have heard a lot of good things said for StrongVPN, but Witopia are a bit cheaper (US$50/year for their basic VPN service against $55 for StrongVPN), and Witopia offer many more servers (65 cities in 40 different countries) from which you can choose, whilst StrongVPN give you servers in four countries (Europe and North America only). I have also found their tech support to be very good, with response to tickets usually returning in less than 30 minutes. If you are using OSX, Witopia provide a VPN app that will display a drop down menu in your menu bar that allows you to quickly connect to either their closest server (they have one in Bangkok), or else a server in any other country. If it's UK services you are interested in, they have servers in London and Manchester, both of which have always been fast for me from BKK.

Also, Witopia allows you unlimited switching between servers. StrongVPN allows you ten switches, and they you get charged an additional fee if you go post that.

If you want to watch UK TV then download the program from http://www.uk-tv.asia/

It gives you free access to BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, ITV3, Film 4 and Sky News. You can watch live or record for up to 5 days.

I use it every day and it doesn't cost a penny.

Hope that helps.

Another VPN option is Expat Shield.

1) There is a big advert at top saying it costs 490b per month

2) Its not a VPN - its a Windows program

Out of interest, what made you think it was free since you mention that incorrect fact twice. Are you a shareholder? rolleyes.gif

Quote from their FAQ:

Do you support torrents and P2P services?

We’re a data security and privacy company first and foremost and although torrent technology certainly has many legitimate applications, it is often used in the trading and sharing of copyrighted files with 100,000 of your closest friends.

It is a fact that P2P sites are often riddled with viruses, law enforcement honeypots, identity thieves, as well as, of course, copyrighted material. We also hear regularly from customers that when they subscribed to proxy services that cater to P2P activity they were sometimes attacked through these sites.

Suffice it to say that, all arguments aside, we’d be remiss as a security company to encourage use of these sites so , like most every other VPN provider, we must say that if your goal is to download or upload files that contain copyrighted content without the owner’s permission, please do not do so over our network.

-----------------

So does that mean practically all VPN's discourage or ban the use of torrent sites, or is it just Witopia?

The basic programme set is free, and strangely they are all of the ones that most people are interested in, BUT, unfortunately it is a Windows only programme...

I also use OSx, so watch iPlayer via the Chrome browser with the Hola add-on activated. This works very well.

I'm not an expert on VPN's. However I can confirm that UKTV is free of charge if you are happy watching just the UK terrestial channels of BBC1, BB2, ITV 1, ITV2 plus Sky News Channel. If you need access to additional channels you must register and pay 490 Baht (roughly 10 UK Pounds) per month.

The software is well designed, WYSWYG and has great program planning aps.

Give it a try before you spend your money. No contract, no cost :-)

...it is often used in the trading and sharing of copyrighted files with 100,000 of your closest friends.

True, but only the first 100,000 I'm strict about that sort of thing. whistling.gif

It is a fact that P2P sites are often riddled with viruses, law enforcement honeypots, identity thieves, as well as, of course, copyrighted material.

So Witopia has no problem with using VPN to bypass local laws regarding porn, Lèse-majesté or in fact just using a VPN service at all!

And no problem with letting their VPN service bypass geographic limitations on access to services like TV broadcasts limited to one nation and not the whole world where other broadcast companies might hold the legal rights to broadcast a programme such as Motor Racing or Soccer etc, what's that called... Oh I remember now "Copyright Infringement". cheesy.gif

Suffice it to say that, all arguments aside, we’d be remiss as a security company to encourage use of these sites so , like most every other VPN provider, we must say that if your goal is to download or upload files that contain copyrighted content without the owner’s permission, please do not do so over our network.

OK so you block copyright torrent traffic but not Ubuntu OS releases or scientific data communication that also use P2P protocols?

No of course not, this is not about upholding the law, Witopia is not Judge Dredd reborn for the internet, the only reason is that you are squirming out of paying higher bandwidth charges for the popularity of P2P traffic. We would respect you for being honest rather than making up lies.
