Official Vows Crackdown On Khaosarn Road's Illegal Vendors



BANGKOK: -- Bangkok authorities will no longer tolerate vendors who clog the street of the famous Khaosarn Road, a high-ranking official has warn.

Mr. Chullanop Nuchanart, director of Bangkok′s Phra Nakorn Area, in which Khaosarn Road is situated, said he had received many complaints from residents in the popular backpackers′ destination concerning the vendors who put their stalls on the road, which in theory should be reserved for motor traffic.

With these vendors selling goods and street food on the road, Khaosarn is turned into an an unauthorised ′walking street′, Mr. Chullanop said.

"Cars can′t travel in the Road during the day, and the place is overwhelmed with people at night," he said, adding that the situation had caused much trouble to residents and shop-owners along the Road.

Nevertheless, even some shop-owners started placing stalls on the motor way, too, Mr. Chullanop said.

He clarified that street vendors are not allowed on the road way from 06.00 to 22.00 but they are permitted to hawk their goods on the pavements.

The official said he had delivered the warning to many vendors in the area that the authorities would launch crackdown on those who continue violate the laws, with fine set at 2,000 baht per offence. After the warning was issued, the situation improved somewhat, he added.

Seriously one of the main attraction of Khaosan is its absence of through traffic..and all vendors on that street benefit from this: Cars don't shop people do !

They should declare it a walking street and properly allocate pitches for the traders. It's not rocket science to do so, and they should line it so that emergency vehicles can get access at any time.

The shops need re-stocked so they should be banning the vendors from setting up before a certain time. Easy.

Making it a walking street would be nice ... why dont they fight the street vendors on silom road , its so impossible to walk on pavements from Saladeang to convent ..... easier to walk on the road .... a bit smarter way would be appreciated sometime.

The municipality boys came around to where we live in around soi Thonglor 2 weeks ago

painted crocked white line on the pavement to say to all vendors stay behind this

line, alas, the very next day, business is still the same and the vendors are completely

ignoring the restrictions and guidelines like nothing happened...

Beautiful, offenders get warned in advance.

They know exactly where the offenders are and what to look for, so instead of nabbing them, no, they warn them for upcoming raids.

It's already a walking street in the evening. However, venders have taken over the street, leaving no room to walk. I'm sure they are paying someone for the privilege, so nothing will change.

And there was me thinking by 'illegal vendors' they were going to do something about the illegal activities, no no, the fake degress and passports and drivers licences etc., all fine as long as the sellers have permission to be there....

If its illegal in the first place, why does it have to be drummed into the thick police all the time.

The problem is not with kaosan.... The problem is the police and their "dont give a damn" attitude, that lets crap like this escalate...

Soon there will be a crackdown on schoolkids illegally riding to school... and it will happen when a kid dies or when a kid ends up killing someone as they tear through streets with no idea why they SHOULDNT be doing so.

YYYYYAAAAHHH-HA-HA-HA!!!!! That is sooo needy What do you recommend then? The vendors have been doing this for a long time but do not give them fair notice that it will no longer be permitted? Tough cookie you are!!! Get out the saps and riot shields and suprise em all with a good lickin', eh. Pathetic. Ohhh yeah you had to end it with that "Thai style" dig. This is the most insubstantial ridiculous Thai Bash in a long time. You Win!!!
