Raw Disk Image Copy

howto

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks

I need to Raw Image a hdd-2-hdd.

A 1TB to a 1TB spinner.

I do not want to use M$ Windows.

Choices::

- DOS would be ok, if there are UDMA drivers,

which work on SATA 3 Gbs, not PATA.

- Or a *nix solution (however I am a *nix noob)

I have Hiren Boot CD.

Last time I did this was 1995 using Norton Ghost.

DOS based on PATA.

Suggestions, tips, advice is welcome.

T'anks

I assume you are talking about Windows formatted hard drives? I use Acronis True Image Home for my backups and it includes disk cloning, that is copy partitions from one drive to another directly.

Tywais

I clearly said I will not use Windows.

Acronis True Image runs under Windows.

Windows has a nasty habit of 'touching the disk"

I want a "Forensic Copy".

A "sector copy".

I do not want to

-recover bad blocks

-compress free space.

Hdd1 has issues.

I want to do this prior to

sending that disk to Gregory in Phuyket.

I do not want this disk lost by EMS.

So DOS or *nix are my options.

This is not just a "backup".

What is wrong with the forum posting?

what a PITA.

You are right. However the latest version also supports Linux as I have backed up and imaged a 2nd drive on my Slackware server. And you do know what a sector by sector clone is don't you as that can be done also via Acronis. You boot off the Acronis DVD/Flash so not in the windows environment. But never mind, will leave it to others to suggest and not try to be of assistance in the future.

I have been using Acronis for YEARS. They have a Linux (I think) based BOOT disk that you use to boot the computer so you can make the actual images.

Windows is NOT running while Acronis is either backing up or restoring images.

Clonezilla is excellent and free, google it, d/l and burn the Clonezilla image to CD. Linux based, just boot up the CD and follow the steps. Can be a bit confusing so read the choices and be careful on selecting the source and the target HDDs.

This boot disc can be also transfered to USB Stick (forgot how to) that makes things even easier.

I plug in a USB harddisk and the usb stick and make the backups. When a harddisk dies I do the restore the same way and I am going again in a couple minutes...very simple

Electric failed at 11:30 am Tuesday, restored at 5 pm.
Internet down till 6 pm Wednesday (yesterday).
Dead tree from 2011 flood fell on the lines.
Actually a good thing, I need a longer lasting UPS.

@Tywais, apologies if it seems I offended you.
When I wrote
"What is wrong with the forum posting? what a PITA."
I should have said
"What is wrong with the forum posting software? what a PITA."
'cause it looked good...
- in the editor,
- in the preview,
- but on the OP and replies, line breaks are omitted.
So my post and the replies are fraked.
This has nothing to do with your post,
indeed I highy respect your comments.
Please do try to be of assistance in the future.

Folks pay attention...
