I'm no expert on Thailand, but you could manage in Australia. Some of the comments in this thread seem very odd.

$US75,000 invested in debenture stock in Australia will return 8.5% pa, subject no tax if this is your only income. That's $Australia10,625 pa.

Accommodation in Brisbane (semitropical), share a house with three others, and you can manage on $A120 pw shared amongst 4 = $1,560pa. Not a great house, but central and 4 bedrooms.

That leaves $A174 per week. Do your own cooking and you'll have around $A100 pw for travel and the odd beer. Buy a scooter. Or push bike.

Of course, inflation will eventually catch up with you. But the worst that can happen is that you need to rejoin the rest of us in the work force.

The scenario would work even better in Indonesia. Why not Thailand?

I am totally wrong for starting out in Pattaya. I don't smoke, drink,or partake in loose women.

Never a truer word spoken. You are one in a million..hundred million.??

I have always maintained that for a happy, healthy and balanced lifestyle, mentally,Phys.etc 2 out of the 3 human temptations should be considered even actively pursued...A sort of Ying and Yank (sorry Yang) I dont smoke...however

You really want to try KSR.???

PBR-Well that sounds like a great idea, however I would just be going from the USA to Australia, really not much of a change, my main reason for coming to Thailand is not the favorable exchange rate, but the culture and totally different lifestyle.  But thanks for the tip.

Rinrada-I don't smoke, this is true.  I dont drink, this is true as well.  I don't partake in loose women, also true.  However it is not true that I am some kind of monk.  I have plenty of sex with nice looking women, just not prostitues or women who come on to me for wealth, that' all.  I have a pretty good judge of character, but who knows, it may and probably will fail me eventually.  I may date some woman who's only interested in me as an ATM there in Thailand, but I don't, I repeat, don't go out or buy prostitues.  So don't make it sound like I'm some kind of monk, because it's not true.  I've had girlfriends that are freakier than pornstars, and I have the pics and videos to prove it, but that doesn't mean I need to go to a massage parlor 5 minutes down the road to get some kind of fix.  You are seeing things in only black and white...either someone likes hookers or they don't like sex....there is a middle road as well, and that's where I'm at.  Oh and those websites are hilarious, however nowhere near what I'm like.  If you want to get a glimpse of me my  yahoo profile is http://profiles.yahoo.com/jasonfieber and if  you just have negative things to say, please don't say anything at all..I'm not here to make fun of people or ram disgusting comments down people's throats, I'm just here to share information, I thought that's what a forum is for?  Thanks to everyone who has given me thoughtful advice.

Good topic Jason.

This is an interesting one because I think Thailand has more tourist cliches than almost anywhere else.  In fact I have a theory that the near thought of a cliche makes a place more interesting and fun, I think it comes down to ###### good marketing.  And if it's fun, then it must be good.

If you tell someone your going to Thailand, they think you mean, your not having enough sex, which may or not be true(not you, i'm generalising here). Whilst this may or may not have some relevancy, it's often quite small minded of people, the *majority* of the population who just arn't cultured.  Mention a country, and the first thought is usually of the cliche and not of the totality.  I like to think who cares, what people do is upto them, you have free wil but some of society does'nt always work like that, let me give you an example.

If you put Thailand on your resume, and you apply for a position that requires security clearance, you can bet their going to do some extra background research.  East vs West cultural differences again.  What one culture finds acceptable, another does not.

Most people just see the cliche, and not what's behind it, that's why I like this place, open minds :-)

Should I say it ... bar girls arn't sex workers, at least they don't think they are(never trust or listen to a bar girl, earplugs and then cotton wool helps, and if in an emergency, a snorkel and wetsuit will save your life hehehe).  Last I read, Stickman has come round to thinking he's been kidding himself and they are :-)  This should be a new topic, it's a very interesting topic too, are they in denial, are they right, should bar girls be licensed, are people just kidding themselves.  I'll share some thoughts later if anyone reply's.

Then there's the label these people are given, that I find quite interesting and amusing.

America > Hooker

Prostitute >  Europe

Sex worker > New Europe

Bar girl > Thailand

Then there's the other cliche, "sex in Thailand" does'nt necessarily mean taking a bar girl out, but 9 times out of 10 people will take it to mean that.  There are many free and easy Thai's and other travellers, but the majority seem to have a big hangup over the topic sex in itself.  So mention Thailand and you've been pre-judged.  This is why I posted some previous topics, and the social stigma's affecting international business within Thailand, which make for interesting situations.  It needs to be explored further because it's such an important issue.

Then there is another bigger cliche, America and sex.  Sex is part of life, yet parts of society have strange views.  From my experience, Buddhists don't, although i'd like to know others opinion on that one.   Freud did some good work breaking down barriers in the west, however I think went perhaps a little too far.

Don't worry about the holier than thou thing, everyone's been there.  You may not realise it, but this is part of the cultural barrier, or culture shock that you go through.

They say many Thai men have mistresses, which is another interesting topic.

Maybe it's time for a forum discussion to break down some stereotyping in a sensible fashion, if allowed ?  There's a lot of rubbish on the net on this topic and a lot of social stigmatism.

I wonder how many sarcastic reply's i'll get, hahaha :-)

Ive been looking at the comments from .. Jonniebkk , to  Jasonfieber ( cost of living in Thailand ) as some one who has now been here in Thailand for 2 years, and came here with a " Dream "and having gone through a lot of up's and down's  , from living in a small room in Pattaya, eating Thai soi food every day, only drinking at bars with happy hours, and having to watch every baht i spent, yes you can live on 10,000 Bt, a month but as i soon found out, this way of life is " NO "  way of life!. and  you would end up going crazy , ( with out the nulling effect of large amounts of Chang  ) so " YES " Jonniebkk has hit the nail right on its head . and I totall agree with him, the Thai dream can turn into a nightmear , but we all thave  to go our own way, and take some knocks ,

but don't believe any of it...don't forget, it doesn't comport with your preconcieved notions of living the stress-free life in some little tropical paradise (of course to which you have never visited).

george (and all you other morons posting and monitoring this board) why don't you refer this idiot (God...if i see any more of his idiotiotic newbie questions i think i may actually step outside for songkran and get dunked with water) to all the posts (the most recent just yesterday or so) on the ajarn.com forum from all the washed-up English teachers in Bangers packing up and going home because they just can't survive on the B25-45k starvation wages on offer.  And this is over 2-4 times what this Jason supposes to live on!!!   do the guy a ######ing favor...don't thrown water to a drowing man!!!

shit...just the other day...who was it that posted on ajarn of his "test" advert for english teachers offering a salary of like B175 PER DAY and was swamped with responses from all over the world...many people with advanced degrees and experience willing to work for $ 4.00 PER DAY (less than $100 per month if working a 6-day week).  that's what the english teaching racket in Bangers is all about...competing to see who will work for the least amount of money.

as a capitalists...i love it.  here here to all the owners making money off the labouring classes (in this case stupid farangs who want to live in Thailand but can't really afford it so will work for sweatshop waqes just to stay here) but do you, jason, really want to be on the other end of this stick??
