Folks

I am new to this forum so please forgive me if I post this in the wrong place. I am hoping that someone can answer a few questions for me that is very easy to understand. I am aware that this topic has been discussed and I have read replies, however I have become more confused by the more I read due to my lack of knowledge on phones. First of all I am taking my own personal mobile phone and removing my sim card once I arrive in Thailand. Can you please advise me what I need to do now? Please answer in simple steps.

1. Is there a prefix number I can use to get cheap calls when ringing from one mobile phone till another within Thailand?

2.If someone from the UK wants to ring me from a mobile or landline is there a cheap number they can use if I give them my thai number?

3.If I want to ring the UK is there a cheapnumber I can use?

4. When my friend was In thailand he was able to send text messages to UK however he could not send photos why?

I really appreciate it if someone could take the time to answer this query for me. Eddy

First you will need to buy a Thai SIM card to fit in your phone. just ask for a Pay as you go card. The three major companies are AIS, DTAC, and True, with AIS and DTAC being the larger two.

These phone companies have kiosks after Customs at Suvarnabhumi airport, near Gate 3. Tell them if you want a card just for calls, or calls and internet access. once you install the card you will have a Thai phone number, that you can give to your friends. You can buy credit to top up at any 7-11

I'm not sure about True, but AIS and DTAC have a prefix that you can use when dialling international numbers at reduced rates. You can ask when you buy the SIM.

I think that AIS's is 005, so for the UK you would dial from an AIS phone 00544(0)uk number. So +44(0)2345 123456 would be 005442345 123456 to call at the cheap rate.

You should be able to send texts as normal.

As for photos, you might have to ask for MMS to be activated when you are buying the card or get a SIM with an internet package.

Hope this help.

Many thanks for this I appreciate it. Eddy

There are many numbers available from the UK (using a land line) to phone Thailand numbers.

Simply google ;-

cheap calls UK to Thailand

Calls start from 0.5p per minute.

Often a LOT cheaper to use the land line in the UK than a mobile as mobile companies charge more for the connection fee.

Ask your (their) telephone company if they charge for connection to these low cost numbers. Often a 10p connection fee. But it varies between companies.

In Thailand itself, I still prefer CAT telecom card for phoning the U.K.

Depends where in Thailand you are staying if they have a CAT telecoms office.

Buy a minimum 200 Baht card (never the 100 Baht card - as the calls cost more).

They come with clear instructions in English too.

2 baht per minute to a UK land line.

6 Baht per minute to a UK mobile number.

web site for call charges around the world from CAT.....

Hope that helps you decide.
