Hi sorry if this a in he wrong section.

My girlfriend has a 250k white gold engagement ring that we are desperate to sell but have no idea where to do in order to sell it as I presume going to most of the Thai jewellers you see your gunna get ripped off.

We have the certificates and valuations and the ring is in good condition, we will be in Bangkok for the next two months then hua hin.

Any information on where would be a good plac to start is much appreciated

I presume you mean 250k baht an not $£...

If the ring cost 250k baht new or you have a jewelers insurance valuation cert that quotes that, then its probably worth about 50k to 80k baht on the second market. Thats if you're lucky and it looks like new.

People always have unrealistic expectations when trying to sell gemstones because they are so overpriced when they buy them, new jewelry grade diamonds are one of the worst investments you can make.

Many tourists who go to Dubai looking to make a quick buck get stung by this.. Go on holiday buy a ring for £3'000, get home and have it valued at the jewelers £5,000 valuation, happy days :) put it on ebay £1200 :(

If a jeweler values it for 250k tell him you will sell it to him for 200k and see what they says, if he says no offer him it for something low like 100k. You dont have to sell it but it might give you a idea of its true value.

I know a guy who got engaged to a lovely Soi 33 working woman with a daughter. He bought a $20,000 wedding set from the USA because he loved her so much. Sadly for the guy the woman's 5 year old daughter was deathly sick in the hospital and needed virtually all the vacation monies he brought for that 3 week trip. It was only like the 3rd day and he had little cash to make it thru the trip. Not nearly enough that's for sure. He felt good though because his money given to the wife saved the girl's life! I helped the guy to try and get his brand new Sony Laptop made in Japan bought in USA sold. Shockingly he was offered 26,000 baht for the laptop at pantip. I told him to instead sell it to me for that price so I bought that and his 2 very nice digi cams so this helped him make it thru. He did take the wedding set to a Thong Lor pawn shop where he was offered 10K baht for the $20,000 set. I advised declining. He held onto that and made it thru. Story has good end as he found a nice girl his own age (38 I think) at the end of the trip. Great guy and I'm glad it worked out. He's now married to that lady after 10 years with 2 kids. Getting back to the ring, based on that experience I don't think you're get nearly enuf to be worthwhile selling in this country unless u can find a farang like me who likes deals and buys stuff cheap. Sell it in a western country. Looks like computers are ok to sell. I think his computer cost him $3000 new so at 42/dollar , 26,000 baht he got $600 for the 3 month old laptop computer. I used that thing for as my everyday computer for 7 years. Still works! Japanese non Thailand bought quality. One of those digicams was a gem but I dropped it after 2 years. the other cam was pretty much junk

So does anybody think il have better luck if I take it back to the UK when I visit? And it was valued in the US at 7900

absolutely my friend wait till you get to UK. You won't get anything here for it, just a rape job. unless as I stated above you find a farang getting married or even not who wants to please his wife/gf. that's your only hope in this country. UK you can get at least something for it. If there's ever a choice to buy and/or sell something in a western country vs Thailand, it's a no brainer. The western country always unless u find a farang looking to buy what you sell or vice verse

another experience I had was buying a Sofa sectional unit that sold for 69K at SB furniture. this Belgian guy needed to get rid of it and I had new condo to furnish. Win win. I gave him 26K for the 6 month old thing. He may have had no buyers before he had to move. I found that guy right here on Thaivisa when I inquired about where to get furniture. Hey anyone out there need a nice Ringo for the GF/Wife?

OP I would consider putting a pic and perhaps a scan of the certificate right here. You never know. Where was it bought? what are specs etc

It's a white golf ring with 1carat diamond

Wow I just bought my wife a 1 carat single stone 14K white gold engagement ring for $1150 on my USA trip in May. Those rings get hugely overpriced. We got a smoking deal but quality is not so high as you would expect for that dirt low price

$2,000 - $3,500

Absolutely exquisite quality diamonds in the low carat end of this range, but use caution when considering the larger stones. Make sure you are familiar with the "Four Cs" of diamond qualitybefore purchasing. The 1-carat stones in this price range often have one or more of the following: visible inclusions (flaws), mediocre color quality ("faint yellow"), and/or a lower grade "cut" (which affects the "brilliance" of the diamond).

Carat Weight: 0.40 - 1.00

Diamond Quality: Varied.

Setting: 14-18K gold (white or yellow), Platinum

You bought absolutely cheap, a -Industry- working Diamond? rolleyes.gif

Everything is possible,

$7,500 - $10,000
You can find some spectacular diamonds in this price range -- big and beautiful. The best value is generally found in the 1.00 - 1.50 carat range. You'll find less spectacular, but still absolutely lovely diamonds in the 1.51 - 1.75 carat range. The 1.76 - 2.50 carat stones in this price range often have one or more of the following: visible inclusions (flaws), mediocre color quality ("faint yellow"), and/or a lower grade "cut" (which affects the "brilliance" of the diamond).

Carat Weight: 1.00 - 2.50

All you will get for it is scrap value. the white gold in the band is not worth a lot. If it was platinum, then the value would be more. It's all down to the stone. Because it is set in white gold and not platinum, then I'd doubt that it is if very high value. One tends to go with the other.

I bought a platinum and diamond ring in China for about £250,I took it back to the UK and had it valued at £440. I tried to sell it in Pattaya and they offered me £30, I just laughed at him. You will get a better price in the UK for it.

A ring is only as expensive as the diamond and the market value of the gold.

Family heirlooms does not increase the price.

Your paying for designs that are mass produced, so your better off making your own, if you want something unique.

Yeah I think diamonds are a scam so when I got a low end 1 carat for $1150 I was ecstatic no matter the quality. the whole diamond thing is a racket. especially the boggle your mind with the 4 C's. omg. isn't it true that the world's diamonds are in few hands and are super plentiful and fake shortages are created. LOL

Oh yeah I know it's low end. from Kohl's in USA. 14K white gold obviously on lower end of scale of the famous 4 C's/ none the less I'll gladly take it and pocket a grand or more. It looks fine and its a racket anyway

I think the diamonds are beneficial investment, i even recently buy one on the site orospot.com, and i hope i will never sell it. And in the future present to my child. But if you really want to sell, i think you should wait till going to the UK and sell there
