Roads blocked off for motorcade...who?

I was just minding my business and I walked onto the street and thought it was the dead zone... no cars... and all the Thai were hiding back from the sidewalks... I'd never seen anything like it in my life. One of them says "don't... Police!!" and so I back up for a bit.... and sure enough notice police are holding back all traffic from the road... then a big motorcade passes by.... the car in the middle being some beige like color (nothing all that fancy IMO).

Just curious who that was. Would it be a high-level politician? Or do even mayors get police escorts like that?

Beige cars in a motocade = Royalty.

Wear yellow. Smile. Everything is perfect.

Cool. I'm a monarchist myself so there is no need for false pretenses.

Kind of weird to choose beige? Is it just because yellow is too weird to pick for a car color and beige is the closest color that isn't too bright?

I see the roads being blocked all the time in BKK down at Victory Monument and also from my apartment the express way near bye gets blocked every few days. The other day it was blocked for almost 15 minutes then a parade of around 12 red cars and 2 beige flanked by police cars and bikes drove past.

Sometimes it's just a couple of cars not always red or beige either. Can be blacked out windowed 4x4s and others.

it is a yellowish beige and a reserved colour, i do believe they have toned it down though. i do not believe it is in use anywhere else in the world

I saw a Jap tourist get dragged down off a footbridge by a cop when a motorcade was going by. The poor guy had no idea what was going on and the halfwit copper was furious. Welcome to Thailand!

Happened to me a couple of times - once for Thai royalty going along Sukhumvit Road.

Another time it was George bloody Bush going past Central Chidlom.

Cop seemed to be blowing his whistle at me last week as I stood and waited to see what was happening from the bridge that connects to the BTS at Vic Monument.

Why are you not allowed to be on a footbridge or walk?

Because your feet are above the head of whoever is passing.

How disrespectful! I hope if this event repeats itself you will not walk all over the cherished customs and traditions of the Thai people!

I think officially the color is ivory.

Was driving from Udon Thani towards Sakon Nakhon and saw a cop at every intersection/dirt road kissing the main road.

This for the next 30kms, until I decided to stop at a petrol station for a pee.

Then some flashing police cars flashed by with an indistinct little Nissan Sunny ending the series.

How many police men did it take from A to B? 100? 500? 1000?

So was it disrespectful for me to be walking by on the road? Is the reason to not have pedestrians/cars on the road cultural rather than security?

I thought it was for security concerns or maybe to keep jaywalkers from getting killed because they were driving very fast definitely above the limit.

The fact you could drop a brick (or something nastier on the passing car bears little relevance when put against having your feet above their heads.

I was driving back into Chiang Mai the other night and had a cop car (Honda accord) with lights blaring pass me. It was closely followed by a nice Porche Cayenne. I slotted in behind them, hung back about 200m and had the fastest run into town ever! Quite easy for rich folks to get police escorts, for a price of course......
