GirlDrinkDrunk
I had a GF in Vietnam named Tak, my next GF was named Toe. I tried and tried but could not make the trifacta by finding a girl named Tik. Is Tik a Thai female name? I can't say I recall any ladies named Tik in Thailand. Yes... I've known multiple Tiks here... My impression is, it's a not uncommon lady's nickname. not at all i have been acquainted with about 10 over the years and currently know 3. Songhua
"Poo" is very unfortunate. Imagine being in Farangland and someone asks out of curiosity what her name means in Thai and she replies, "Crap". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sM-4YuoIqPY

smccolley
i knew a girl named super porn she was my friends wife she changed it to her nickname when she got to aus ... I do not believe that it was spelt the way that have done I'm guessing the actual name is "Supaporn" -- again, a not uncommon lady's name. There are all varieties of "porn" names here, which always tend to draw "Tit"ers from western folks. My wife's nickname is Porn, I have asked her to spell it "Pon" as it is pronounced when using facebook or talking to my parents. i have never spelled it the correct way to my folks... That being said she hooked up my 3BB internet so the SSID is PORN. That goes over real well when my company computer techs take control of my computer for repairs...
devolad
Just recently got back from doing some work in Hong Kong - the corporate lawyer I used was called Winki, and the senior banker I used was called GiGi - I thought I may have missed something in translation, but their respective business cards confirmed what I thought I had heard. Both ladies were very easy on the eye. Nevertheless a lawyer who winks and a banker with a penchant for the horses .......?

If your name were Jim would you change it because it has another meaning in Thai? Giggling about a name like supaporn or just porn is an adolescent pleasure that fades 5 minutes after the plane lands. I personally trust that my friends and family would be adult enough to get past it.

I am certain the family would get over it but I really don't feel like explaining it 11 times (9 siblings and 2 parents...). This way no explanation is needed. Spelling it "Pon" has saved me hours...

TallGuyJohninBKK
The problem is... Thai names like "Porn" or words like "khrap" have such strong other meanings in English. Porn means one and pretty much only one thing in English, etc. etc... And Thailand doesn't really need any additional advertising/reputation in that regard. So trying to explain to those not familiar with Thai language about the alternate meanings is kind of like trying to push the big rock up the steep hill. rjcampbe
Years ago, when I was still doing such things, I did an alphabetical name trifecta with a series of girls named Joy, Koy, and Loy. Never found a Moy, or Moi?? Joy was the sweetest, Koy was the wildest, and Loy I only remember because of her name!
canuckamuck
The problem with the name porn comes from the stupid rules for transliteration set up for British accents. The name Porn is properly pronounced Pohn, or Pon, or even Pawn. And certainly not Porn. Unless where you come from a place like the UK that no longer pronounces the r sound properly. robertson468
A close Family have named their Daughters Aa, Bee and Cee. At that rate they could have had another 23 Daughters and still not run out of names. Wife's Sister is called Som and her husband is called Daeng (Red), as is a Cousin who is younger in years. To differentiate between them I started addressing the younger one Junior, now the name has stuck. We have friends called Porn, Phoo, Meow and Bum, but since the latter is a rather big guy no one has suggested any alternatives .

I hear ya, "it doesn't mean that in her language, get over it" is a most taxing 10 words. So have any of you changd your name from jim? It has very strong meanings in thai. or better yet, have you stopped using the word 'yet' in day to day conversation with the natives?
