Starting to Read Thai

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I am starting to read Thai. I pretty much understand all the alphabet, but have limited vocabulary (pretty basic).

I am wondering if anyone knows of a good simple Thai book (series / collection) to help me start reading, preferably not just for kids (but if so, i don't mind).

Ideally i would prefer one with Thai and English together.

Does such a book collection exist? Any recommendations?

Or even a comprehensive collection of vocabulary flashcards to get my vocab more up to scratch. I was in a very well-stocked bookshop yesterday, but all they had in the way of flashcards was the alphabet and food dishes.

Thanks in advance! coffee1.gif

I started out reading Scooby-Doo and You. There are about 24 or more books in the series published by Nation Egmont price 45 baht each. They have the English story and the Thai translation, and are designed for learners of English. In fact I think that the Thai is easier to understand for a learner of Thai because the English is very slangy American English.

I have now moved on to Jack Reacher books, so I am not sure if the Scooby books are still available in the shops. Thai books seem to have one print run and when they are sold out they are not readily reprinted.

Why not go with the pros? Maani was used by millions of Thais to learn Thai.....you start reading from lesson one....and every subsequent lesson builds on the previous. It's all available free......pdfs, mp3, test questions, you name it.
