Double nationality ,too late ?

Featured Replies

Hi Thaivisa,

I would need some help or similar experiences from you guys,

My girlfriend was born in Germany(German father and Thai mom) and came to Thailand at the age of 3, so she studied ever since in Thailand.

She actually has German nationality only and I wondered how she could get a Thai passport/Nationality ? without losing her German one.

Is it possible to have double nationality now or is it too late ?

If it is possible, where should I go and contact and what documents should she bring with her ?

Thank you very much

She is Thai by way of birth. The child of a Thai national is by law a Thai national. What does need to be done is that the Thai government is notified of her birth. For that the birth must be properly reported to the amphur where she was born. For Thai nationals born abroad, the Thai embassy for that country acts as amphur and the birth must be reported there. The embassy will than issue a Thai brth certificate and her birth will be entered into the registers in Thailand. Now the Thai government is aware of her birth and knows she is a Thai national. She can than get a Thai ID-card and passport. (The passport can be applied for together with the birth certificate).

Thailand allows dual nationality and Germany will as far as I know also allow it in the case of a person born with dual nationality.

As said, the birth certificate must be applied for at the Thai embassy in Germany. But she can apply through the Thai Foreign Ministry, consular department and fill in the forms there. The Consular department then sends the forms to Germany and the Thai embassy will issue the birth certificate without the need for her to go to Germany herself.

She will need her German birth certificate and details/papers from both her parents.

www.consular.go.th is the website of the consular department
