BANGKOK, Aug 23 - Thai authorities on Thursday destroyed over one million items of counterfeit merchandise, worth more than 1.4 billion baht in the capital Bangkok.

Deputy Commerce Minister Nutthawut Saikua joined this year’s second disposal and destruction of pirated items. This time they tallied 1.6 million pirated articles including clothing, watches, shoes, auto parts, CDs and DVDs as well as cosmetics.

The activity was jointly conducted by Department of Intellectual Property and the Royal Thai police.

All 1.6 million items, weighing 90 tonnes, were reportedly worth about 1.4 billion baht, and were confiscated by the authorities during the past year.

Speaking at the disposal event, the deputy commerce minister acknowledged that the Thai government had designated 2013 the country’s “Year of Intellectual Properties Protection”.

He called on agencies concerned to raise social awareness of intellectual property (IP), while working with those owning IP goods on increasing economic value and carry on the suppression of all IP violations. (MCOT online news)

Must have been old stock that wasn't selling.

What was the basis of the valuation? What they sell it for in a typical Thai street stall, a mall vendor, a mega complex vendor like MBK or Panthip? Or was this the valuation of what the authentic DVD or authentic watch would really sell for in legitimate retail locations? Just exactly how do they do these valuations? Does any one really believe that much of the confiscated goods doesn't circulate back in to the street through the THai black market network?

Remember all the fake goods market is controlled by organised crime! It makes more money than drugs. This is show for public consumption. It means nothing.

If they stopped all the pirated stuff that is traded in this country millions would be out of a job and very few would be able to afford the real thing.

I suspect that before that lot was destroyed it had been well picked over and the best stuff liberated.

1.6 million items totalling 1.4bn baht

so ~1000 baht per unit blink.png

Certainly not what I would pay for it.whistling.gif

On a slightly different note, one of my Thai friends bought one of those bootleg operating systems. I told them to let me run avg on it first. Over 30 hits of which 10 were trojans and viruses.blink.png Strangely enough the OS was clean, it was all the add-ons that were infected.

My hard drive crashed and I brought it to Phuket town toshiba to get a new hard drive and OS installed. I still have a virus on the hard drive. I'm just going to dump it and start with a fresh drive again.

Ah look! Just like clockwork, never one to miss a good photo op. Plus, he does have a habit of showing up just before things get burned down, our deputy commerce minister.

Is it Steam Roller day again?

Probably more for 'International' public consumption...wink.png

Over supply in the market. This should keep the price of those Gucci bags at a reasonable rate.

Just walked past that ammount in the market yesterday !

WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP ! There is at least 100 billion baht more in central shopping malls alone not to mention fake watches and bags in the markets. If they were serious they would go straight to Pantip and confiscate all the pirated movies and software, then go down the road to Patpong and confiscate about 50% of the goods on sale there ! Oh, but then the police would lose their bribes so that would never do ! And as for Nattawut, what a c#^$, I wouldn't pee on him if HE was on fire !

First time I have heard of the "Department of Intellectual Property." (The DIPs are coming! Amscray!)

Bit of a behind the scenes struggle going on between suppliers/ high ranked officials jostling for market share says my skeptical gf

Just a week of sales from MBK would equal that, big deal!!!

just part of the overhead costs of the pirates

They should have kept the merchandise and destroyed the rice instead.

I live near a Tesco with an outdoor shopping complex and often chat with some of the vendors when I go to buy toys with my son. They're always complaining about crippling rates and one guy explained how if he were to fall behind, his shop would be locked and he'd lose access to his stock. The sad thing about this anti-piracy drive is that most of destroyed goods had probably been confiscated in this way - ie. not through effective police work but just kicking out vendors.

What exactly are pirated auto parts? Does some unauthorized factory make parts and put name brand packaging on it? Why don't they just sell them as their own low price brand? Plenty of companies sell Chinese auto parts in the USA that are basically just knock offs of name brand stuff.

Was the destruction of some 90 tonnes of fake goods witnessed by any credible entity ? cheesy.gif

My view is that the said 90 tonnes was just swept under an enormous carpet. cheesy.gif
