Three civilians gunned down in restive Thai south



BANGKOK, August 24, 2013 (AFP) - Gunmen dressed as local officials killed three Muslim civilians at a tea shop in Thailand's insurgency-hit south on Saturday, according to police, in the latest act of violence in the festering rebellion.

3 villagers killed, 1 injured in gun attack at tea shop in Yala

YALA, Aug 24 -- Three villagers were killed and one was injured in a gun attack on a tea shop in the provincial seat of the southern province of Yala, as CCTV cameras were torched in Than To district.

The victims in the tea shop shooting were identified as Chalee Sama, Harong Daba and Tuansoh Waba who all died at the scene, while Yaya Wayeh was injured.

According to the initial investigation, a group of 4-5 customers were having tea at the shop when suspected millitants in the pick-up truck parked at the tea shop before opening fire into the shop.

The witnesses said that there were around eight people in the pick up truck, the first group walked to a nearby mosque and the second group walked to the tea shop, saying hello before shooting.

They also stole three guns which belonged to the victims.

Meanwhile, 11 CCTV cameras in Than To district were damaged by a suspected insurgent group.

Eight CCTV cameras were torched, while three others were stripped of wires.

Soldiers also searched a rubber plantation in Yala provincial seat after receiving a tip off that an insurgent had hidden explosive devices.

The authorities found a 5-kg gas cylinder, electrical wiring, electronic circuitry, nails, bolts and fertilizer, which were contained in a bag and buried. (MCOT online news)
